Test Description

The number below refers to the step number on the diagnostic table.

  1. If the answer to Step 2 is Yes, and the Keyless Entry system is also inoperative, go to Keyless Entry System Inoperative in Keyless Entry

Attempt to operate the fuel door release with the fuel door release switch on the head lamp switch assembly in order to verify the complaint.

Does the fuel door release operate?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF.
  3. With the scan tool, observe the Fuel Door Release Switch parameter in the Non-HVAC Data list of the Instrument Panel Module (IPM).

Does the scan tool display OFF?

Go to Step 4

  1. Activate the fuel door release with the fuel door release switch on the headlamp switch assembly.
  2. With the scan tool, observe the Fuel Door Release Switch parameter.

Does the parameter change from OFF to ON?

  1. Verify that the valet switch is in the OFF position.
  2. Disconnect the fuel door release relay.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. Connect a test lamp between the coil side battery positive voltage circuit of the relay and a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 6

  1. Connect a test lamp between the coil side feed circuit of the fuel door release relay and the coil side control circuit of the fuel door release relay.
  2. With the scan tool, command the fuel door release relay On and OFF.

Does the test lamp turn ON and OFF with each command?

Does the test lamp remain illuminated with each command?

Connect a test lamp between the switch side control circuit of the fuel door release relay and a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Connect a 10-amp fused jumper wire between the switch side feed circuit and the switch side control circuit of the fuel door release relay.

Did the fuel door release operate?

Go to Step 23

  1. Disconnect the harness connector from the fuel door release actuator.
  2. With the 10-amp fused jumper wire still connected between the switch side feed circuit and the switch side control circuit of the relay, connect a test lamp between the control circuit and the ground circuit of the actuator harness connector.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

With the 10-amp fused jumper wire still connected between the switch side feed circuit and the switch side control circuit of the relay, connect a test lamp between the control circuit of the actuator harness connector and a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Disconnect the valet switch.
  2. Connect a test lamp between the input circuit of the valet switch and a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Connect a fused jumper wire between the valet switch input circuit and the coil side feed circuit of the fuel door release relay.
  2. Connect a test lamp between the coil side feed circuit of the fuel door release relay and a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Disconnect the fuel door release switch harness connector.

Does the scan tool display OFF?

  1. Disconnect the fuel door release switch harness connector.
  2. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between the switch signal circuit and the switch ground circuit of the harness connector.
  3. With the scan tool, observe the Fuel Door Release Switch parameter in the Non-HVAC Data list of the IPM.

Does the scan tool display ON?

  1. Connect the 3-amp fused jumper wire between the switch signal circuit of the fuel door release connector and a good ground.
  2. With the scan tool, observe the Fuel Door Release Switch parameter.

Test the coil side control circuit of the fuel door release relay for a short to battery positive or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
