J 28733-B Front/Rear Spindle Remover

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the wheel and tire. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.

  3. Object Number: 402796  Size: SH
  4. Insert a drift punch (1) or screwdriver into the caliper and rotor to prevent the rotor from turning and remove the wheel drive shaft nut.
  5. Remove the brake rotor. Refer to Front Brake Rotor Replacement in Disc Brakes.

  6. Object Number: 105002  Size: SH
  7. Disconnect the front wheel speed sensor electrical connector and unclip from the dust shield.
  8. Vehicle equipped with brake wear indicator sensor, disconnect and unclip from the dust shield.

  9. Object Number: 397703  Size: SH
  10. Remove the wheel bearing and hub retaining bolts and dust shield.

  11. Object Number: 105004  Size: SH

    Important: The wheel bearing and hub are replaced only as an assembly.

  12. Using J 28733-B separate the wheel bearing and hub from the drive axle.
  13. Remove the wheel bearing and hub and dust shield.

Installation Procedure

Important: Clean rust and foreign material from the knuckle mounting face, bore and chamber to allow for proper seating of the bearing and knuckle.

  1. Install the wheel bearing and hub and dust shield to the drive axle.
  2. • Apply a light coating of grease to the steering knuckle bore.
    • Do not handle the wheel bearing and hub assembly by the ABS sensor wire.
  3. Install a new drive axle nut and draw hub and bearing onto the axle.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the wheel bearing and hub retaining bolts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the wheel bearing and hub retaining bolts to 130 N·m (95 lb ft).

  7. Connect the front wheel speed sensor electrical connector and clip to the dust shield.
  8. Vehicles equipped with brake wear indicators connect the sensor electrical wire connector and clip.
  9. Install the brake rotor. Refer to Front Brake Rotor Replacement in Disc Brakes.

  10. Object Number: 402793  Size: SH
  11. Insert a drift punch (1) or screwdriver into the caliper and rotor to prevent the rotor from turning.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the wheel drive shaft nut to 160 N·m (118 lb ft).

  13. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  14. Lower the vehicle.
