ACCELERATOR PEDAL RATTLE PARTS TO CORRECT (INFORMATION)

ACCELERATOR PEDAL RATTLE - 1982 E/K

A rattle heard on 1982 Eldorados and Sevilles equipped with DFI engines (engine code "8") primarily during Cruise Control operation may be caused by the accelerator pedal vibrating against the accelerator lever assembly. To correct this condition, replace the accelerator cable assembly with P/N 1626871 using the service procedure listed below.

CAUTION:

To reduce the risk of loss of control which could result in an accident, do not attempt to insulate the pedal or lever assembly with material such as foam tape or rubber hose. Otherwise interference with free accelerator pedal operation might occur.

1. Remove air cleaner assembly. Remove clip retaining accelerator cable to throttle body lever and disconnect cable from throttle body linkage (refer to Detail 1, Figure 1).

2. Disengage cable from bracket on intake manifold (refer to Detail 2, Figure 1).

3. Disengage cable from rear engine bracket at protective sleeve (refer to Detail 3, Figure 1).

4. Remove LH instrument panel lower cover.

5. Disengage accelerator cable retainer from accelerator lever assembly (refer to Detail 4, Figure 2).

6. Remove rubber retainer by sliding away from bulkhead and over end of cable (refer to Detail 5, Figure 2).

7. Disengage retainer which secures cable in bulkhead by squeezing both ears and pushing cable assembly through into engine compartment (refer to Detail 6, Figure 2). A 13mm open-end wrench pushed onto the ramp surface of these two retainer ears will help to facilitate removal.

8. Install new cable assembly (P/N 1626871) through bulkhead from engine compartment side, making certain the retainer ears lock the cable into place.

9. Install rubber retainer over pedal side of cable end and position retainer against bulkhead inside vehicle.

10. Install retainer onto accelerator rod by placing cable through slot in rod and pushing retainer toward front of car, securing it firmly to the rod.

Care must be taken during installation of retainers in steps 9 and 10 so that cable is not kinked or damaged.

11. Reverse steps 1 through 4 to complete installation of accelerator cable.

12. Verify free movement and return of accelerator pedal and linkage.

For warranty purposes, use labor Operation No. J5330, Cable, Accelerator Control - Replace, at 0.3 hours.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
