DELAYED ENGAGEMENT-3254L & 325 INSTALL VALVE 0R PLUG ORIFICE

SOME 1982 AND 1983 THM 325-4L AND 1979 THUR 81 THM 325 TRANSMISSIONS MAY EXPERIENCE A DELAYED ENGAGEMENT. THIS CONDITION MAY BE DUE TO OIL DRAINDOWN IN THE PUMP PRIME CIRCUIT. THIS CONDITION CAN BE CORRECTED BY INSTALLING A NEW VALVE AND SLEEVE ASSEMBLY (FIGURE 1-B) IN THE CASE PUMP INTAKE HOLE. WHEN SERVICING ANY 1982-83 THM 325-4L 1979-81 THM 325 FOR DELAYED ENGAGEMENT ORDER SERVICE PACKAGE 8635971 AND FOLLOW THE SERVICE PROCEDURE GIVEN BELOW. THIS PROCEDURE INCLUDES THE INSTALLATION OF A TRANSMISSION PUMP INTAKE CHECK VALVE (P/N 8639810) AND SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCES REPAIR TIME. SERVICE PROCEDURE: 1. REMOVE THE TRANSMISSION OIL PAN AND OIL SCREEN. MAKE SURE THAT THE TRANSMISSION OIL SCREEN "O" RING IS ALSO REMOVED FROM THE PUMP INTAKE HOLE IN THE TRANSMISSION CASE. 2. INSTALL THE NEW VALVE AND SLEEVE ASSEMBLY INTO THE CASE PUMP INTAKE HOLE (FIG. 1-A) USING A 1/2 INCH DEEP WELL SOCKET ON A 3/8" ENTENTION. CAREFULLY DRIVE THE VALVE AND SLEEVE ASSEMBLY INTO THE PUMP INTAKE HOLE WITH A SMALL HAMMER. 3. REASSEMBLE THE TRANSMISSION FOLLOWING SERVICE MANUAL PROCEDURES.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION PROVIDED IN THE CADILLAC BULLETIN STEPS 1-3 SHOULD, IN MOST CASES, ELIMINATE DELAYED ENGAGEMENT CONDITIONS. HOWEVER, IF THE CONDITION PERSISTS AFTER FOLLOWING THIS PROCEDURE, IT MAY BE NECESSARY TO PROCEED TO STEP 4 AND INSTALL SERVICE PACKAGE P/N 8635967. THIS INCLUDES A #8-32 SET SCREW TO BE USED FOR PLUGGING THE LINE BLEED ORIFICE IN THE CASE COVER AND A NEW DESIGN PRESSURE REGULATOR VALVE BUSHING. WHEN INSTALLING THIS KIT, IT IS ESSENTIAL TO USE BOTH PARTS TO ENSURE PROPER TRANSMISSION OPERATION. IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO REMOVE THE CHEDK VALVE INSTALLED IN STEP 2. 4. REMOVE THE TRANSMISSION FROM THE VEHICLE AND DISASSEMBLE THE CASE COVER AS LISTED IN THE APPROPRIATE SERVICE INFORMATION MANUAL. 5. PRESS THE DRIVE SPROCKET SUPPORT OUT OF THE CASE COVER (REFER TO SIM SECTION 325-4L, FIGURE NOS. 153 AND 157). NOTE: THE CASE COVER MUST BE SUPPORTED AS OUTLINED IN THE SERVICE INFORMATION MANUAL TO PREVENT DAMAGING THE COVER. 6. REMOVE THE LINE BLEED ORIFICE CUP PLUG FROM EITHER SIDE WITH A 1/8" PUNCH (REFER TO FIGURE 2). 7. TAPSCREW THREADS INTO THE LINE BLEED ORIFICE HOLE USING #8-32 TAP. RUN THE TAP INTO THE HOLE FROM THE SPROCKET SUPPORT SIDE APPROXIMATELY HALFWAY THROUGH; DO NOT TAP THE HOLE ALL THE WAY THROUGH (REFER TO FIGURE 3). 8. COAT THE SET SCREW WITH LOCTITE AND INSTALL INTO THE CASE COVER WITH A 5/64" ALLEN WRENCH UNTIL SNUG. 9. REMOVE THE PRESSURE REGULATOR BUSHING FROM THE CASE AND INSTALL THE NEW BUSHING.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
