DTC Descriptor

DTC B396A: Liftgate Motor Control Circuit

Diagnostic Fault Information

Important: Always perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure.

Circuit/System Description

The liftgate module supplies power and ground to operate the liftgate motor. The direction of the motor is determined by which of the control circuits is supplied power and which is grounded. The liftgate module varies the current flow through the motor ground circuit to control the speed of the motor as necessary.

Conditions for Running the DTC

A liftgate open or close function is attempted.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The following failures to either the open control or the close control circuit will set the DTC:

    • An open
    • A short to ground
    • A short to voltage

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

The liftgate operation is suspended for the ignition cycle.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

    • The liftgate module detects a circuit fault.
    • A scan tool is used to clear the DTC.

Circuit/System Verification

  1. Attempt to open the liftgate. The liftgate should smoothly open.
  2. Attempt to close the liftgate. The liftgate should smoothly close.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the liftgate module harness connector containing the liftgate open/close control circuit.
  2. With a DMM, measure for approximately 1 ohm of resistance between the liftgate open control circuit and the liftgate close control circuit.
  3. If resistance does not equal 1 ohm, test both circuits for a short to voltage, open or high resistance. If the circuit/connections test normal, replace the liftgate motor assembly.
  4. Test or replace the liftgate module.

Repair Instructions

Important: Always perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification after completing the diagnostic procedure.
