Diagnostic Fault Information

Important: Always perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure.

Circuit/System Description

The liftgate ajar indicator uses the ajar switch located in the liftgate latch to determine if the liftgate is open. With the liftgate open, the liftgate ajar switch is closed. This grounds the liftgate ajar switch signal circuit, indicating to the rear integration module (RIM) that the liftgate is ajar. The RIM will then send a serial data message to the driver information center (DIC) requesting the LIFT GATE AJAR message be illuminated.

Diagnostic Aids

A malfunctioning liftgate latch, in which the ajar switch is stuck in the closed position, will cause the LIFT GATE AJAR message to be displayed at all times.

Circuit/System Verification

With the liftgate closed, view the DIC. The liftgate ajar message should not be displayed.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, with a scan tool verify the LGM Latch Ratchet parameter is INACTIVE with the liftgate closed.
  2. If the parameter is ACTIVE with the liftgate closed, test the liftgate ajar switch signal circuit for a short to ground. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the liftgate latch.
  3. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the RIM.

Component Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the liftgate latch.
  2. Test for infinite resistance between the ajar switch terminal and the low reference terminal with the latch in the open position.
  3. If less than infinite resistance, replace the liftgate latch.
  4. Test for less than 1 ohm of resistance between the ajar switch terminal and the low reference terminal with the latch in the closed position
  5. If greater than 1 ohm, replace the liftgate latch.
  6. Test for infinite resistance between the ajar switch terminal and the liftgate latch housing.
  7. If greater than infinite resistance, replace the liftgate latch.
