DTC Descriptor

DTC B153E: Liftgate Position Sensor Signal Circuit

Diagnostic Fault Information

Important: Always perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle prior to using this diagnostic procedure.

Circuit/System Description

The liftgate module uses an optical sensor to monitor the liftgate position at all times. The optical sensor requires a 5-volt reference circuit and a return circuit from the liftgate module. There are also 2 signal circuits from the liftgate module to the optical sensor. The optical sensor sends pulses through both signal circuits to the liftgate module whenever the liftgate is in motion. The optical sensor pulses allow the liftgate module to calculate the liftgate position at all times. The optical sensor signal circuits switch from 0.01-0.45 volt as the liftgate is moving.

Conditions for Running the DTC

Liftgate operation is requested.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

The liftgate module does not detect optical sensor pulses when liftgate is in motion.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

Liftgate operation is suspended.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

The liftgate module detects optical sensor pulses or a scan tool is used to clear the DTC.

Diagnostic Aids

Inspect the optical sensor for proper and secure installation in relation to the liftgate motor.

Circuit/System Verification

  1. Attempt to open the liftgate. The liftgate should smoothly open.
  2. Attempt to close the liftgate. The liftgate should smoothly close.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition ON, disconnect the liftgate module harness connector C3.
  2. Verify a voltage value of between 4.5-5.5 volts is present between the reference voltage terminal 8 and low reference terminal 11 at the liftgate module.
  3. If voltage does not equal 4.5-5.5 volts, replace the liftgate module.
  4. Verify continuity is present between the reference voltage terminal 8 and the low reference terminal 11 at the liftgate module harness connector.
  5. If no continuity is found, inspect both the reference voltage circuit and low reference circuit for an open. If all circuits test normal, replace the liftgate motor assembly.
  6. Verify no continuity is present between the reference voltage terminal 8 and ground.
  7. If continuity is found, inspect the reference voltage circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the liftgate motor assembly.
  8. Verify continuity is present between the reference voltage terminal 8 and the sensor 1 signal terminal 9 at the liftgate module harness connector.
  9. If no continuity is found, inspect sensor 1 signal circuit for an open. If all circuits test normal, replace the liftgate motor assembly.
  10. Verify no continuity is present between the sensor 1 signal terminal 9 and ground.
  11. If continuity is found, inspect the sensor 1 signal circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the liftgate motor assembly.
  12. Verify continuity is present between the reference voltage terminal 8 and the sensor 2 signal terminal 10 at the liftgate module harness connector.
  13. If no continuity is found, inspect sensor 2 signal circuit for an open. If all circuits test normal, replace the liftgate motor assembly.
  14. Verify no continuity is present between the sensor 2 signal terminal 10 and ground.
  15. If continuity is found, inspect the sensor 2 signal circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the liftgate motor assembly.
  16. If all circuits test normal, test or replace the liftgate module.

Repair Instructions

Important: Always perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification after completing the diagnostic procedure.
