Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 333146  Size: SH
  1. Install the J 42640 to the steering column.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  3. Remove the front tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  4. Remove the front air deflector. Refer to Air Deflector Replacement -- Front .

    Caution: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control which could result in personal injury.

    Notice: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the coil assembly in the steering column to become uncentered which will cause damage to the coil assembly.

  6. Remove the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.
  7. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the power steering gear.

  9. Connect the variable effort steering harness connector.

  10. Object Number: 886244  Size: SH
  11. Remove the outer tie rod retaining nuts.

  12. Object Number: 643351  Size: SH
  13. Using the J 24319-B , remove the outer tie rod from the steering knuckles.
  14. Place a drain pan under the vehicle.

  15. Object Number: 1301495  Size: SH
  16. Remove the power steering hoses to power steering gear retaining bolt.

  17. Object Number: 908682  Size: SH
  18. Disconnect the power steering hoses from the power steering gear.
  19. For vehicles with a 4.6L (LH2) engine, then follow the following steps:
  20. 13.1. Disconnect the left brake line from the brake hose.
    13.2. Plug the brake line.
    13.3. Carefully position the brake line to the side.

  21. Remove the power steering gear mounting bolts.
  22. For vehicles with a 4.6L (LH2) engine, remove the left lower control lever for bolt and nut assembly.
  23. Remove the power steering gear through the left wheel opening.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the power steering gear through the left wheel opening.
  2. For vehicles with a 4.6L (LH2) engine, install the left lower control lever, mounting bolt and nut.
  3. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  4. Install the power steering gear retaining bolts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering gear retaining bolts

    First Pass
    55 N·m (40 lb ft).

    Second Pass
    Tighten an additional 80°.

  6. For vehicles with a 4.6L (LH2) engine, install the left harness to the brake hoses.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 27 N·m (17 lb ft).

  8. Install the power steering hoses to the power steering gear.

  9. Object Number: 1301495  Size: SH
  10. Install the power steering hoses to the power steering gear retaining bolt.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 23 N·m (17 lb ft).

  12. Remove the drain pan from under the vehicle.

  13. Object Number: 886244  Size: SH
  14. Install the outer tie rod to the steering knuckles.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 82 N·m (60 lb ft).


    Object Number: 909110  Size: SH
  16. Connect the variable effort steering harness connector.

  17. Object Number: 907425  Size: SH
  18. Connect the intermediate shaft to the power steering gear.
  19. Install the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.
  20. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).

  21. Install the tire and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  22. Lower the vehicle.

  24. Remove the J 42640 from the steering column.
  25. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding.
  26. Adjust the front toe. Refer to Front Toe Adjustment .
