Circuit/System Description

The electronic brake control module (EBCM) monitors the Phase A , Phase B, Index and Analog signal circuits from steering angle sensor. The analog signal is used along with the index pulse to calibrate the steering angle sensor (SAS). The SAS position is then determined by Phase A and Phase B signals. The 2 input signals Phase A and Phase B are approximately 90 degrees out of phase. Once calibrated, the EBCM dynamically interprets the relationship between the Phase A and Phase B inputs, and determines the position of the steering wheel and the direction of the steering wheel rotation.

Conditions for Running the DTC

    • Ignition ON.
    • Ignition voltage is greater than 10 volts.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

C0455 09 or C0455 19

The EBCM detects an internal sensor failure.

C0455 0A

The EBCM detects the steering-angle signal not changing while the yaw rate signal changes.

C0455 39 or C0455 5A

The EBCM detects a short to voltage, short to ground or an open/high resistance on one of the steering angle sensor circuits.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

    • The EBCM disables the vehicle stability enhancement system (VSES) for the duration of the ignition cycle.
    • A DIC message and/or a warning indicator may be displayed.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

    • The condition for the DTC is no longer present.
    • The EBCM clears the history DTC when a current DTC is not detected in 40 consecutive drive cycles.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the steering angle sensor.
  2. Ignition OFF, test for less than 5.0 ohm between the low reference circuit terminal  2 and ground.
  3. If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the EBCM.
  4. Ignition ON, test for 4.8-5.2 volts between the 5-volt reference circuit terminal 1 and ground.
  5. If less than the specified range, test the 5-volt reference circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the EBCM.
    If greater than the specified range, test the 5-volt reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the EBCM.
  6. Verify the scan tool Steering Wheel Sensor Signal parameter is less than 1 volt.
  7. If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit terminal 6 for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the EBCM.
  8. Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal 6 and the 5-volt reference circuit terminal 1. Verify the scan tool Steering Wheel Sensor Signal parameter is greater than 4.5 volts.
  9. If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the EBCM.
  10. Verify the scan tool Digital SWPS Phase A parameter is High.
  11. If not the specified parameter, test the signal circuit terminal 7 for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the EBCM.
  12. Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal 3 and the low reference circuit terminal 2. Verify the scan tool Digital SWPS Phase A parameter is Low.
  13. If not the specified parameter, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the EBCM.
  14. Verify the scan tool Digital SWPS Phase B parameter is High.
  15. If not the specified parameter, test the signal circuit terminal 4 for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the EBCM.
  16. Install a 3A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal 4 and the low reference circuit terminal 2. Verify the scan tool Digital SWPS Phase B parameter is Low.
  17. If not the specified parameter, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the EBCM.
  18. Ignition ON, test for B+ between the signal circuit terminal 5 and ground.
  19. If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the EBCM.
  20. If the circuits test normal, replace the steering angle sensor.

Repair Instructions
