Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the differential assembly. Refer to Differential Replacement.

  2. Object Number: 680400  Size: SH
  3. Remove the differential side bearings by doing the following:
  4. 2.1. For the 8.6 inch axle, install the differential assembly into a vise.
    2.2. For the 10.5 inch axle, place a block of wood on each side of the differential assembly.

    Install the differential assembly into a vise.

    2.3. For the 8.6 inch axle, install the J 22888-20A puller  (2) and the J 8107-4 plug  (1) over the differential case side bearing bore.
    2.4. Using the J 22888-20A puller  (2), and the J 8107-4 plug  (1) or the J 36597 pilot  (1), remove the differential side bearings.

Installation Procedure

  1. For the 8.6 inch and the 10.5 inch axles, install the differential side bearings by doing the following:
  2. 1.1. To protect the differential case for the 8.6 inch axle, install the J 8107-4 plug in the case on the side opposite the bearing installation.
    1.2. For the 8.6 inch axle, install the J 21784 installer  (2) and the J 8092 handle  (1), on the differential case bearing as shown.
    1.3. Using a hammer and the J 21784 installer  (2) or the J 29710 installer  (2) and the J 8092 handle  (1), install the side bearings.
  3. Install the differential assembly. Refer to Differential Replacement.
