Attention: THIS BULLETIN ONLY APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH RADIO RPO U3R, UZR OR U3U. Proceed with this bulletin ONLY if the customer has commented about this concern AND the EI number is listed in GMVIS. If the customer has not commented about this condition or the EI does not show in GMVIS, disregard the bulletin and proceed with diagnostics found in published service information. THIS IS NOT A RECALL -- refer to TSB 04-00-89-053A for more detail on the use of Engineering Information Bulletins.


Condition

Some customers may comment on various radio concerns.

Cause

Important:  This bulletin ONLY applies to vehicles equipped with Radio RPO U3R, UZR or U3U. For vehicles equipped with any other radio, refer to Service Information -- do not proceed with this bulletin.

GM Engineering has analyzed many of the returned radios. However, through testing, engineering has been unable to determine the reason for replacing many of the radios. As a result, engineering would like to obtain information prior to any repairs being made.

If a customer brings their vehicle in for a radio concern, please complete the following steps prior to replacing the radio:

  1. Describe, in detail, the customer's concern.
  2. Is the concern constant or intermittent?
  3. Is the vehicle currently exhibiting the condition or can it be duplicated?
  4. When does the problem occur? Immediately, while driving, after a long period of use, etc.
  5. Does the concern go away if the ignition is turned OFF?
  6. Answer the appropriate questions that relate to the customer's concern:
  7. Navigation Map:

    6.1. Will the radio accept and read a disc with no errors?
    6.2. Is the navigation map displayed?
    6.3. Is the system navigating properly?

    DVD/CD Player:

    6.1. Does the DVD or CD function properly using a different disc?
    6.2. Is the disc a commercially legal copy or burned?
    6.3. Does the DVD or CD eject, read and play properly?
    6.4. Does the DVD or CD make noises?
    6.5. Verify the function of the DVD or CD player using a test disc.

    Display Screen:

    6.1. Is the radio audible?
    6.2. Is the touch-screen functional (able to select stations)?
    6.3. Is the radio functional (able to seek stations)?
    6.4. Is the rear camera display functional when the vehicle is in reverse?

    Audio:

    6.1. Are the chimes too loud?
    6.2. Is the audio distorted?

    Other Radio Hardware:

    6.1. Does the radio reset spontaneously?
    6.2. Is the radio flip screen non-functional?
    6.3. Are the buttons functional? If not, which buttons do not function?

  8. Before making any repairs, contact engineer -- Alex Cusenza at 586-651-1308 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. EST. If Alex is unavailable, leave a message with the following information:
  9. Technician Name

    Dealer Name, Dealer Code, Dealer Phone #

    VIN, Repair Order #

    Important:  Alex will return the phone call within one hour. If Alex is unable to return the call, proceed with diagnostics and repair according to information found in SI.
