GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

Circuit Description

The BCM and IPC monitor their input voltages to determine if it is below 16.0 V.

The ACM, IRC, MMM, MSM, and PHN receive a class 2 message from the PZM notifying these modules of high system voltage.

Conditions for Running the DTC

This DTC shall run only if the setting module has power, ground and the ignition is not in START mode. This DTC shall execute regardless of the battery voltage.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

DTC B1982 sets when the battery voltage raises above 16.0 volts.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

    • A message shall be sent out on the class 2 lines to notify all other modules of high battery voltage.
    • The modules disable the setting of U codes and other DTCs.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

    • The DTC will clear current status when the voltage is less than 15.5 volts for 1.2 seconds.
    • A history DTC will clear after 50 consecutive ignition cycles if the condition for the malfunction is no longer present.
    • Use the ON-Board clearing DTCs feature.
    • Use a scan tool.

Diagnostic Aids

Important: If DTC B1982 is set as current in the ACM, IRC, MMM, MSM, or PHN use the table to diagnose the BCM.

DTC B1982 may set if the vehicle is connected to a battery charger on fast or boost charge.
