ANTI-LOCK INDICATOR 'ON' WITH NO DTC SET

SUBJECT: ANTI-LOCK INDICATOR "ON" WITH NO DTC SET (REPLACE EBTCM OR REPAIR EBTCM CONNECTOR)

MODELS: 1995 CADILLAC CONCOURS, DEVILLE, ELDORADO, SEVILLE

CONDITION:

SOME OWNERS MAY COMMENT THAT THE ANTI-LOCK INDICATOR TURNS "ON" INTERMITTENTLY. "NO TRACTION CONTROL" DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTC'S) MAY BE SET.

CAUSE:

THE HARNESS CONNECTOR OF THE ELECTRONIC BRAKE AND TRACTION CONTROL MODULE (EBTCM) HAS A SHORTING BAR. THIS BAR GROUNDS THE ANTI-LOCK INDICATOR CIRCUIT WHENEVER THE HARNESS IS DISCONNECTED FROM THE EBTCM. A GROUNDED SHORTING BAR CAUSES THE ANTI-LOCK INDICATOR TO TURN "ON", INFORMING THE DRIVER THAT THE ABS IS DISABLED.

IMPORTANT: THE SHORTING BAR IS AN ESSENTIAL SAFETY FEATURE THAT SHOULD NOT BE MODIFIED IN ANY MANNER.

THE FOLLOWING CONDITIONS MAY CAUSE THE EBTCM SHORTING BAR TO SHORT TO GROUND WHEN THE CONNECTOR APPEARS TO BE SECURE.

1. A LOOSE OR POORLY SEATED EBTCM HARNESS CONNECTOR MAY CAUSE THIS CONDITION. (IMPROPER SEATING OF THE HARNESS CONNECTOR TO THE EBTCM MAY DAMAGE CONNECTOR TERMINALS).

2. THERE IS A PLASTIC "BOSS" OR "FINGER" MOLDED INTO THE HEADER CONNECTOR OF THE EBTCM THAT INSERTS INTO THE SHORTING BAR WHEN THE CONNECTOR IS PROPERLY SEATED. IT PREVENTS THE SHORTING BAR FROM SHORTING. THE CONDITION DESCRIBED IN THIS BULLETIN MAY OCCUR IF THIS PLASTIC BOSS IS:

- BROKEN, OR - MOVED TO ONE SIDE OF THE SHORTING BAR (AS OPPOSED TO BEING INSERTED IN THE CLIP).

CORRECTION: (SEE FIGURE 1)

1. DISCONNECT THE HARNESS CONNECTOR FROM THE EBTCM.

2. INSPECT THE EBTCM HEADER CONNECTOR FOR A DAMAGED PLASTIC BOSS. REPLACE THE EBTCM IF THE PLASTIC BOSS IS BROKEN.

3. INSPECT THE HARNESS CONNECTOR. CHECK FOR TERMINALS THAT ARE PUSHED IN OR DAMAGED. REPAIR OR REPLACE DAMAGED TERMINALS USING WIRING REPAIR KIT, P/N 12166317.

4. CAREFULLY RESEAT THE HARNESS CONNECTOR, MAKING CERTAIN IT LOCKS INTO POSITION.

5. PULL UP ON CONNECTOR TO ASSURE IT IS LOCKED.

6. ALL BOSCH ABS/TCS COMPONENTS SHOULD BE RETURNED TO ROBERT BOSCH CORP. FOR ANALYSIS, (GM OF CANADA DEALERS SHOULD RETURN PARTS THROUGH THE REGULAR PARTS HANDLING PROCEDURE):

ROBERT BOSCH CORPORATION 38000 HILLS TECH DRIVE FARMINGTON HILLS, MI 48331-3417
