Front Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement FE1, FE3

Tools Required

J 28733-B Front/Rear Spindle Remover

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.

  3. Object Number: 402796  Size: SH
  4. Insert a large flat bladed tool (1) into the caliper and rotor to prevent the rotor from turning.
  5. Remove the wheel drive shaft nut.
  6. Remove the rotor. Refer to Front Brake Rotor Replacement in Disc Brakes.

  7. Object Number: 105002  Size: SH
  8. Disconnect the front wheel speed sensor connector and unclip from the dust shield.
  9. Remove the wheel bearing and hub retaining bolts.

  10. Object Number: 105004  Size: SH
  11. Using J 28733-B separate the wheel bearing and hub from the drive axle.
  12. Remove the wheel bearing and hub and dust shield.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 397703  Size: SH

    Important: 

       • Clean rust and foreign material from the knuckle mounting face, bore and chamfer to allow for proper seating of the bearing and knuckle.
       • Do not handle the wheel bearing and hub by the ABS sensor wire.

  1. Install the dust shield, taking care not to damage the bearing outboard lip seal.
  2. Install the wheel bearing and hub to the drive axle. Apply a light coating of grease to the steering knuckle bore.
  3. Install the drive axle nut and draw wheel bearing and hub onto the axle.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the wheel bearing and hub mounting bolts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the wheel bearing and hub mounting bolts to 130 N·m (96 lb ft).

  7. Install the front wheel speed sensor connector and clip to the dust shield.
  8. Install the rotor. Refer to Front Brake Rotor Replacement in Disc Brakes.

  9. Object Number: 402796  Size: SH
  10. Insert a large, flat bladed tool (1) into the caliper and rotor to prevent the rotor from turning.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the wheel drive shaft nut to 160 N·m (118 lb ft).

  12. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  13. Lower the vehicle.

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 402796  Size: SH
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Insert a large, flat bladed tool (1) into the caliper and rotor to prevent the rotor from turning.
  4. Remove the wheel drive shaft nut.
  5. Remove the brake rotor. Refer to Front Brake Rotor Replacement in Disc Brakes.

  6. Object Number: 105002  Size: SH
  7. Disconnect the front wheel speed sensor connector and unclip from the dust shield.

  8. Object Number: 474859  Size: SH
  9. Remove the wheel bearing and hub retaining bolts.

  10. Object Number: 105004  Size: SH
  11. Using J 28733-B separate hub and bearing from the drive axle.
  12. Remove the wheel bearing and hub.

Installation Procedure

    Important: 

       • Clean rust and foreign material from the knuckle mounting face, bore and chamfer to allow for proper seating of the bearing and knuckle.
       • Do not handle the wheel bearing and hub by the ABS sensor wire.

  1. Install the dust shield, taking care not to damage the bearing outboard lip seal. Install the wheel bearing and hub to the drive axle.
  2. Install the drive axle nut and draw hub and bearing onto the axle.
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the wheel bearing hub and bearing bolts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the wheel bearing and hub mounting bolts to 152 N·m (112 lb ft).

  6. Install the front wheel speed sensor connector and clip to the dust shield.
  7. Install the brake rotor. Refer to Front Brake Rotor Replacement in Disc Brakes.

  8. Object Number: 402796  Size: SH
  9. Insert a large, flat bladed tool (1) into the caliper and rotor to prevent the rotor from turning.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the wheel drive shaft nut to 230 N·m (170 lb ft).

  11. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  12. Lower the vehicle.
