Rear Disc Brake Backing Plate Replacement J55

Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution in the Preface section.

Removal Procedure

  1. Release the park brake.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  4. Remove the brake caliper and mounting bracket as an assembly. Refer to Rear Disc Brake Pads Replacement .
  5. Pull down on the front park brake cable and remove the intermediate cable from the connector.
  6. Remove the park brake cable from the brake caliper lever.
  7. Remove the park brake cable from the mounting bracket by depressing the locking tabs.
  8. Remove the brake rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement .
  9. Remove the hub and bearing assembly. Refer to Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement .
  10. Remove the park brake shoe. Refer to Parking Brake Shoe Replacement .

  12. Remove the backing plate bolts.
  13. Remove the backing plate.

Installation Procedure

    Important: The backing plate bolts threads and the threaded holes of the knuckle must be free of residue and debris prior to reapplication of threadlocker in order to ensure proper adhesion and fastener retention.

  1. Install the backing plate.
  2. Prepare the bolts and the threaded holes for assembly:

    • Thoroughly clean the residue from the bolt threads by using denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry.
    • Thoroughly clean the residue from the threaded holes by using denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry.
    • Apply threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488) or equivalent to two-thirds of the threaded length of the lower caliper bracket bolts. Ensure that there are no gaps in the threadlocker along the length of the filled area of the bolts.
    • Allow the threadlocker to cure approximately ten minutes before installation.

    Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  3. Install the backing plate bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the backing plate bolts to 111 N·m (82 lb ft).

  5. Install the park brake shoe. Refer to Parking Brake Shoe Replacement .
  6. Adjust the park brake shoe. Refer to Park Brake Adjustment .
  7. Install the hub and bearing assembly. Refer to Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement .
  8. Install the brake rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement .
  9. Install the park brake cable to the mounting bracket until the locking tabs snap into place.
  10. Install the park brake cable to the brake caliper lever.
  11. Pull down on the front park brake cable and connect the intermediate cable from the connector.
  12. Install the caliper and mounting bracket as an assembly. Refer to Rear Disc Brake Pads Replacement .
  13. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  14. Lower the vehicle.
