Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle?

  1. Press and release the brake pedal.
  2. Observe the stop lamps.

Do the stop lamps operate properly?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Operate the turn signal lamps.

Do the rear turn signal lamps operate properly?

Go to Step 4

Go to Turn Signal Lamps and/or Indicators Inoperative

Is only the center high mounted stop lamp (CHMSL) inoperative?

Go to Step 6

Is there only one inoperative stop lamp?

Go to Step 8

  1. Disconnect the CHMSL.
  2. Connect a test lamp between the stop lamp switch signal circuit of the CHMSL and a good ground.
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Connect a test lamp between the stop lamp switch signal circuit of the CHMSL and the ground circuit of the CHMSL.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Disconnect the inoperative stop lamp.
  2. Connect a test lamp between the supply voltage circuit of the inoperative stop lamp and a good ground.
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Connect a test lamp between the supply voltage circuit of the inoperative stop lamp and the ground circuit of the inoperative stop lamp.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Disconnect the turn/hazard flasher module.
  2. Connect a test lamp between the stop lamp switch signal circuit and a good ground.
  3. Press and hold the brake pedal.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Reconnect the turn/hazard flasher module.
  2. Disconnect the stop lamp switch.
  3. Connect a test lamp between the battery positive voltage circuit of the stop lamp switch and a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Connect a 15-amp fused jumper between the battery positive voltage circuit of the stop lamp switch and the stop lamp switch signal circuit.

Do the stop lamps illuminate?

Test for an open or high resistance in the supply voltage circuit of the appropriate stop lamp. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
