Steering Column Replacement Floor Shift

Tools Required

Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.

Notice: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the SIR coil assembly to become uncentered, which may cause damage to the coil assembly.

Notice: Once the steering column is removed from the car, the column is extremely susceptible to damage. Dropping the column on its end could collapse the steering shaft or loosen the plastic injections which maintain column rigidity. Leaning on the column could cause the jacket to bend or deform. Any of the above damage could impair the column's collapsible design. If it is necessary to remove the steering wheel, use only the specified steering wheel puller. Under no conditions should the end of the shaft be hammered upon as hammering could loosen plastic injections which maintain column rigidity.

1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.



2. Insert J 42640 into the steering column access hole in order to lock the steering column.
3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.



4. Remove the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.
5. Remove the intermediate shaft from the power steering gear.
6. Remove the knee bolster. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
7. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
8. If equipped, remove the transmission shift cable.
9. Disconnect the steering column electrical connectors .
10. Lower the vehicle.




Important: Stabilize the studs in order to remove the nuts securing the steering column to the instrument panel.

11. Support the steering column.



12. Remove the steering column mounting nuts (1) that secure the steering column to the instrument panel.
13. Remove the steering column.
14. Remove the intermediate shaft upper pinch bolt.
15. Remove the intermediate shaft from the steering column.
16. Install the steering column into J 41352 .

Notice: If a service replacement steering column is being installed, do not remove the anti-rotation pin until after the steering column has been connected to the steering gear. Removing the anti-rotation pin before the steering column is connected to the steering gear may damage the SIR coil assembly.

1. Install the replacement steering column to the J 41352 .
2. Transfer the necessary componants from the old steering column to the new column.
3. Remove the steering column from the J 41352 .
4. Install the intermediate shaft to the steering column.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

5. Install the upper pinch bolt to the intermediate shaft.

Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

6. Install the steering column to the vehicle.



7. Install the steering column mounting nuts (1) that secure the steering column to the instrument panel.

Tighten
Tighten the nuts to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

8. Connect the steering column electrical connectors .
9. If equipped, install the transmission shift cable.
10. Install the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
11. Install the knee bolster. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
12. Raise the vehicle.



13. Install the intermediate shaft to the power steering gear.
14. Install the lower pinch bolt to the intermediate shaft.

Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

15. Lower the vehicle.



16. Remove J 42640 from the steering column.
17. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.

Steering Column Replacement Column Shift

4. Remove the intermediate shaft lower pinch bolt.
5. Remove the intermediate shaft from the power steering gear.
6. Lower the vehicle.
7. Remove the knee bolster. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
8. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
9. Disconnect the steering column electrical connectors .



10. Disconnect the transmission shift cable from the linear shift assembly.



11. Remove the clip from the transmission shift cable.



12. Remove the transmission shift cable (2) by squeezing the tabs (1) together and puling the transmission shift cable from the bracket.




Important: Stabilize the studs in order to remove the nuts securing the steering column to the instrument panel.

13. Support the steering column.



14. Remove the steering column mounting nuts (1) from the steering column to instrument panel.
15. Remove the steering column.
16. Remove the intermediate shaft upper pinch bolt.
17. Remove the intermediate shaft from the steering column.
18. Install the steering column onto J 41352 .

Notice: If a service replacement steering column is being installed, do not remove the anti-rotation pin until after the steering column has been connected to the steering gear. 1. Install the replacement steering column to the J 41352 .
2. Transfer the necessary componants from the old steering column to the new column.
3. Remove the steering column from the J 41352 .
4. Install the intermediate shaft to the steering column.

5. Install the upper pinch bolt to the intermediate shaft.

Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

6. Install the steering column to the vehicle.



7. Install the steering column mounting nuts (1) which secure the steering column to the instrument panel.

Tighten
Tighten the nuts to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

8. Connect the steering column electrical connectors .



9. Install the transmission shift cable (2) to the steering column bracket.



10. Install the clip into the tabs of the transmission shift cable.



11. Install the transmission shift cable to the linear shift assembly.
12. Install the knee bolster. Refer to Driver Knee Bolster Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
13. Install the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
14. Raise the vehicle.



15. Install the intermediate shaft to the power steering gear.
16. Install the lower pinch bolt to the intermediate shaft.

Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

17. Lower the vehicle.



18. Remove J 42640 from the steering column.
19. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
