Test Description

The numbers below refer to the step numbers on the diagnostic table.

  1. This step refers to the circuit with the MSM LOGIC 10A fuse.

  2. This step refers to the circuit with the MSM/T&T 25A circuit breaker.

DEFINITION: This test applies to a tilt/telescoping steering column that has no movement at all.

Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle?

Operate the Tilt/Telescope System.

Does the Tilt/Telescope operate normally?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections

Install a scan tool.

Does the scan tool communicate with the driver position module (DPM)?

Go to Step 4

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Observe the Telescope/Tilt Switch parameter while activating the tilt/telescope switch from the Idle position to the Up, Down, In, and Out positions.

Do the parameters change state as expected?

Test the B+ voltage circuit of the driver position module (DPM) for an open or short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 21

Test the ground circuit of the DPM for an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

Test the circuit breaker for an open.

Is the circuit breaker OK?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the DPM connector that contains both battery positive circuits and the ground circuit.
  3. Test the battery positive circuit for an open or a high resistance.

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 21

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the DPM connector that contains both battery positive circuits and the ground circuit.
  3. Test the battery positive circuit for a short to ground or an open.

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 21

  1. Reconnect the DPM connector that contains both battery positive circuits and the ground circuits.
  2. Disconnect both the tilt actuator and the telescoping actuator harness connectors from the DPM.
  3. Replace the fuse.
  4. Turn ignition ON.
  5. Using the tilt/telescoping steering column switch, operate the power tilt and telescoping to all positions.

Did the circuit breaker open again?

Go to Step 20

  1. Reconnect the tilt actuator harness connector.
  2. Using the power tilt/telescoping steering column switch, operate the power tilt and telescoping to all positions.

Did the circuit breaker open again?

Go to Step 16

  1. Reconnect the actuator harness connector telescope.
  2. Using the power tilt/telescoping steering column switch, operate the power tilt and telescoping to all positions.

Did the fuse open again?

Go to Step 17

  1. Disconnect the tilt/telescope switch at the DPM.
  2. Probe each switch signal circuit with a test lamp, while moving the tilt/telescope switch to each position.

Does the test lamp illuminate for all circuits?

Inspect for poor connections at the tilt/telescope switch. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 21

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the DPM connector that contains both battery positive circuits and the ground circuit. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test for a short to ground in the tilt actuator circuits.

Test for a short to ground in the telescoping actuator circuits.

Replace the tilt/telescoping steering column switch. Refer to Telescope Actuator Switch Replacement .

Replace the steering column actuator that caused the circuit breaker to open. Refer to Tilt Motor Replacement or Telescope Actuator Assembly Replacement .

Important: Perform the set up procedure for the DPM.

Replace the DPM. Refer to Control Module References .
