DEFINITION: The telescope function is inoperative but the tilt function operates.

Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle?

Verify that the telescoping function is inoperative.

Does the telescoping function operate normally?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Observe the Telescope Tilt Switch parameter with a scan tool.

Does the scan tool indicate the Idle state?

Go to Step 4

Observe the Telescope Tilt Switch parameter while activating the tilt/telescoping switch to the In and Out positions.

Did the parameter change states as expected?

Go to Step 5

Observe the Telescope Tilt Output parameter in the scan tool Tilt/Telescope Module Data Display list while activating the tilt/telescoping switch to the In and Out positions.

Did the parameter change states as expected?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the steering column tilt/telescoping switch harness connector.

Does the scan tool indicate the Idle state?

Test both of the tilt/telescoping steering column switch In and Out signal circuits for an open or short to voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the steering column telescope actuator control circuits for a short to voltage or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the telescope actuator position sensor 5 volt reference and ground circuits for an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs .

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the tilt/telescoping steering column switch. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the tilt/telescoping steering column telescope actuator. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.
