440T4 TCC OPERATION SERVICE MANUAL UPDATE

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 'J', 'N','A','C','H','E'

Section 7A, pages 48-49 of the 1986 Firenza, calais, cutlass Ciera, Delta 88 and Ninety-Eight Chassis Service Manual and Section 7A, pages 22-23 of the 1986 Toronado Chassis service manual incorrectly state that the TCC may engage in second gear on a 44OT-4 transaxle. TCC engagement occurs only in 3rd and 4th gear.

The Hydra-Matic THM 44OT-4 1985, 1985 and 1985 1/2 Hydraulic Diagnosis Supplement Manual mailed earlier this year is also in error on page 7A3-110-8 on converter clutch controls. The statement of no TCC operation prior to 500 miles is incorrect. Also, the statement that an engine overheat signal will engage TCC in second is incorrect.

Please correct your manuals accordingly by crossing out these statements on the appropriate pages.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
