HARD STARTING/REDUCED PERFORM. INJECTOR PART NUMBERS

MODELS AFFECTED: 1981-1985 DEVILLE AND FLEETWOOD BROUGHAM (RWD) 1980-1985 ELDORADO AND SEVILLE 1983-1985 CIMARRON 1985 DEVILLE AND FLEETWOOD

Some 1980-1985 throttle body injection equipped vehicles may experience hard starting or reduced performance if the incorrect injectors are installed when servicing a vehicle. Injector flow rates vary, therefore, injectors with different production part numbers are not generally interchangeable, even though they may appear to be identical. The injector is identified by the production part number imprinted on the top surface of the injector, see Figure 1. The color coded paint spot which may appear on the top of the injector is used for manufacturing purposes only and must not be used to identify proper injectors.

It should be noted that the 1985 and 1985 1/2 FWD-C injectors and fuel meter assemblies are not interchangeable. These can be identified by the color of the ISC motor and throttle lever. The 1985 injectors listed in the attached chart must be used on a throttle body having a "gold" ISC motor and throttle lever. Likewise, the 1985 1/2 injectors, which were used in production beginning with B.C. No. 242505 (Engine Unit Number 350000) must be used on throttle bodies having a "black" ISC motor and throttle lever.

IMPORTANT: If exchanging a fuel meter assembly with one from a known good vehicle for diagnostic purposes, the two throttle bodies must have the same color throttle lever.

The chart, located on the reverse side, summarizes fuel injector usage on 1980-1985 throttle body equipped vehicles and should be used to determine if the vehicle has the proper injectors based upon the production P/N imprinted on the injector. Listed are the original equipment part numbers, the production part numbers of service parts and the GMWDD service part numbers of the service kit.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
