Interior Lamps

The interior lighting consist of lamps that may be dimmed and lamps that may not be dimmed. The first group includes the lamps that may not be dimmed:

    • Dome lamp
    • Front and rear side door courtesy lamps
    • IP compartment lamp
    • Reading Lamps
    • Rear compartment lamp
    • Roof rail courtesy lamps and/or reading lamps
    • Sunshade illuminated mirror lamps

Non Dimming Features

The interior lamps system features the following functions:

    • An illuminated entry feature that illuminates the courtesy lamps.
    • An interior lamp switch that illuminates the courtesy lamps.
    • An interior lamps delay that deactivates all interior lamps after 10 minutes.
    • Individual switches for control of each interior lamp that is not illuminate with the interior lamp switch.

Courtesy/Illuminated Entry Lamps

When the body control module (BCM) is in an active state (awake) it energizes the Delayed Interior Lamps (DIL) relay . When energized the delayed interior lamps relay supplies voltage to all of the interior lamps, including the illuminated entry lamps. The illuminated entry lamps are turned on when they receive a ground from the interior lamps relay. When the ignition is in the LOCK position the BCM will energizes the interior lamps relay under the following conditions:

    • Manually unlocking the driver side door lock.
    • A change in door jamb input status (open or close a door).
    • The use of the remote keyless entry (RKE) to unlock the side doors.

When the delayed interior lamp relay and the interior lamp relay are energized the courtesy lamps will illuminate. The courtesy lamps/illuminated entry lamps include the following interior lamps :

    • The dome lamp.
    • The front side door courtesy lamps.
    • The roof rail courtesy lamps (depending on their individual switch positions).

When the driver uses the door key in order to unlock the doors, the body control module (BCM) receives a door unlock signal. The BCM must have inputs that indicate that the ignition switch is OFF, the courtesy lamp switch is OFF and all the doors are closed. The BCM will then activate the interior lamps. The courtesy lamps will remain on, approximately 20 seconds after the door is closed. If the ignition switch is turned to either the RUN or START position the courtesy lamps will turn off immediately.

When the driver uses the remote function actuator transmitter to unlock the doors, the BCM will keep the courtesy lamps on approximately 20 seconds. If the ignition switch is turned to either the RUN or START position the courtesy lamps will turn off immediately.

When a door is opened and closed with the ignition not in RUN or START the courtesy lamps will illuminate for 20 seconds.

Courtesy Lamps Manual Operation

The courtesy lamps, may be manually operated by the interior lamp switch. When the interior lamp switch is placed in the ON position the BCM receives a ON input. Upon receiving the interior lamps ON input the BCM then energizes the Delayed Interior Lamps relay (DIL) and the interior lamps relay, which illuminates the courtesy lamps. The courtesy lamps will also illuminate when a restraint system has been activated. The courtesy lamps can be turned ON for ten minutes after the ignition key is removed with the doors closed, by using the interior lamp switch. The interior lamp switch will override any BCM operation of the interior lamps, such as entry illumination.

Delayed Interior Lighting (DIL)

Provides a similar function for the interior lamps as a retained accessory power feature. The BCM will energize the delayed interior lamps relay when the BCM is in the active state (awake). When the delayed interior lamps relay is energized it supplies voltage to all the interior lights. The delayed interior lamps relay will deactivate all interior lamps after 10 minutes once the BCM becomes inactive (ignition OFF and no BCM input activity.)

Dome Lamp

The dome lamp is part of the dome and reading lamps assembly and is mounted to the headliner near the windshield. The dome lamp is turned ON by the interior lamp switch or during illuminated entry.

During illuminated entry or when the interior lamps switch is ON the BCM wakes up and then energizes the delayed interior lamps relay and the interior lamps relay, suppling voltage and ground to the dome lamp and all courtesy lamps.

Front Side Door Lamp

When the RH or LH front door is opened, the front side door courtesy lamps illuminate.

During illuminated entry or when the interior lamps switch is ON the BCM wakes up and then energizes the delayed interior lamps relay and the interior lamps relay, suppling voltage and ground to the front side door lamps and all courtesy lamps.

IP Compartment Lamp

When the IP compartment is opened the IP compartment lamp illuminates, if the delay interior relay is activated ( BCM awake). The IP compartment lamp will operate ten minutes after the ignition switch has been turn OFF.

The IP compartment lamp illuminates when the delayed interior lamps relay supplies voltage to the IP compartment lamp and the IP compartment switch closes, providing a ground path.

Reading Lamps

The reading lamps are part of the dome and reading lamps assembly and are mounted to the headliner near the windshield, each reading lamp may be manually turned on or off using it's own respective switch when the delay interior relay is active ( BCM awake). The reading lamps will operate ten minutes after the ignition switch has been turn OFF.

The reading lamps receive voltage from the delayed interior lamps relay anytime the BCM is awake. The reading lamps receive ground from their individual switches.

Rear Compartment Lamp

When the rear compartment is opened, the rear compartment lamp illuminates.

When the rear compartment is opened, the rear compartment courtesy lamp switch sends two ground signals. The first signal is an input to the BCM that wakes the BCM. When the BCM wakes up it will then energize the delayed interior lamps relay, suppling voltage to the rear compartment courtesy lamp. The rear compartment courtesy lamp switch also provides a second ground for the rear compartment courtesy lamp in order to illuminate the lamp. The BCM also activates the rear compartment lid release open indicator lamp in the instrument cluster.

Rear Side Door Lamp

When the RH or LH rear door is opened, the RH or LH rear side door courtesy lamp illuminates.

When the rear side door is opened, the rear side door jamb switch sends two ground signals. The first signal is a door jamb input to the BCM that wakes the BCM. When the BCM wakes up it will then energize the delayed interior lamps relay, suppling voltage to the rear side door courtesy lamp. The rear side door jamb switch also provides a second ground for the rear side door courtesy lamp and the lamp will illuminate. The BCM also energizes the interior lamps relay illuminating the illuminated entry lamps

Roof Rail Courtesy Lamp

The roof rail courtesy lamps receive voltage from the delayed interior lamps relay anytime the BCM is awake. The roof rail courtesy lamps have a three position switch. When the switch toward the rear of the vehicle the roof rail courtesy lamp will be disabled. When the switch is in the center position the roof rail courtesy lamp receives a ground from the interior lamps relay when the illuminated entry feature is active or the interior lamp switch is ON. Placing the roof rail lamp switch toward the front of the vehicle will ground the roof rail courtesy lamp and illuminate it at all times.

Sunshade Illuminated Mirror Lamps

When the vanity mirror cover on the sunshade is opened, the sunshade illuminated mirror lamp illuminates.

The sunshade illuminated mirror lamps receive voltage from the delayed interior lamps relay anytime the BCM is awake. The sunshade illuminated mirror lamps receive ground from their individual switches when the sunshade is open.

Interior Lamps Dimming

The second group of lamps include lamps which may be dimmed. This group may use a combination of vacuum fluorescent (VF) illumination and of incandescent lamps.

    • Door switches and window switches
    • HVAC control head assembly
    • Radio
    • The instrument panel cluster (IPC)
    • Hazard warning switch
    • Heated seat switches
    • Cigarette lighter switch
    • Fuel tank filler door switch
    • Rear compartment lid release switch
    • Electronic traction control switch
    • Rear sunshade switch

When the park lamps are on and the ambient light sensor indicates low light conditions, all incandescent back lighting turn on at the dimming level indicated by the IP dimmer switch. At the same time all vacuum fluorescent (VF) displays dim to match the indicated dimming level. When the IP dimmer switch is moved from MIN to MAX, all vacuum fluorescent (VF) displays, as well as all incandescent back lighting respond from Minimum intensity to maximum brightness in response to the IP dimmer switch.

Battery voltage is supplied to the solid state dimmer portion of the headlamp switch when the headlamp switch is in the PARK or HEAD position. The solid state dimmer supplies an adjustable amount of voltage to the instrument cluster, gauge cluster, and to other interior displays. The solid state dimmer is grounded to G103 through the headlamp switch. All of the interior displays are grounded through either G103, G200, or G201.

Driver Controls and Modules

The Body Control Module (BCM) module processes the inputs and the controls. The ambient light sensor supplies the BCM with a signal for daytime conditions or for low light conditions.

    • The Body Control Module (BCM)
    • The delayed interior lamps relay
    • The headlamp automatic control ambient light sensor
    • The heater and A/C control
    • The Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC)
    • The interior lamps relay

Driver controls include the following components.

    • The dimmer switch
    • The front side door jamb switches
    • The headlamp switch
    • The interior lamp switch
    • The IP compartment lamp switch
    • The IP dimmer switch
    • The reading lamp switches
    • The rear compartment courtesy lamp switch
    • The rear side door jamb switch
    • The roof rail courtesy lamp switches
