Propeller Shaft Replacement Automatic Transmission

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
  2. Remove the exhaust system. Refer to Exhaust System Replacement.

  3. Object Number: 1236097  Size: SH

    Important: Remove only the propeller shaft coupler-to-transmission flange bolts. Do NOT remove the coupler from the propeller shaft.

  4. Remove the propeller shaft coupler-to-transmission flange bolts (6), nuts (4) and washers (5).

    Important: Remove only the propeller shaft coupler-to-differential flange bolts. Do NOT remove the coupler from the propeller shaft.

  6. Remove the propeller shaft coupler-to-differential flange bolts (6), nuts (4) and washers (5).

  8. Support the propeller shaft at the support bearing.
  9. Remove the bolts (2) securing the support bearing to the vehicle underbody.

  10. Object Number: 1236097  Size: SH
  11. Push the front propeller shaft (3) toward the rear of the vehicle in order to release the propeller shaft coupler (2) from the transmission flange (1).
  12. While holding the front propeller shaft (3), lower the support device under the propeller shaft support bearing.
  13. Remove the support bearing from the mounting studs.

  15. Pull the rear propeller shaft (1) forward to release the coupler (2) from the differential flange (3).
  16. Note the number and location of the shim packs between the support bearing mounting bracket and the underbody to ensure proper assembly.

  17. Remove the propeller shaft from the vehicle.
  18. Inspect the propeller shaft coupler for the following conditions:
  19. • Splitting of the coupler
    • Deep cracking. Minor superficial cracking of the coupler is acceptable.
    • Looseness at the propeller shaft mounting bolts
    • Distorted or missing mounting bolt bushings
  20. If any of the above conditions are found, the propeller shaft requires replacement.

Installation Procedure

  1. Using a clean shop towel, clean the following:
  2. • Differential flange centering pin
    • Transmission flange centering pin
    • Front propeller shaft centering bushing
    • Rear propeller shaft centering bushing
  3. Apply a small amount of lubricant GM P/N 1051344 (Canadian P/N 993037), or equivalent, to the front and rear propeller shaft centering bushings.

  4. Object Number: 1236095  Size: SH
  5. Inspect the propeller shaft-to-flange nuts (4), bolts (6), and washers (5). Replace if damaged or worn.
  6. Install the rear propeller shaft coupler (2) to the differential flange (3).

  7. Rest the support bearing on the support device.
  8. Important: If reusing the propeller shaft-to-flange nuts and bolts. To ensure proper adhesion and fastener retention, the threads must be free of debris prior to the application of the threadlocker.

  9. Thoroughly clean the threads using denatured alcohol or equivalent and allow to dry. Apply threadlocker GM P/N 12345493, (Canadian P/N 10953488), or equivalent, to the propeller shaft-to-flange bolt. Ensure that there are no gaps in the threadlocker along the length of the filled area of the bolt. Allow the threadlocker to cure approximately 10 minutes before installation.
  10. Install the propeller shaft coupler-to-differential flange washers (5) to the propeller shaft coupler-to-differential flange bolts (6).
  11. Install the propeller shaft coupler-to-differential flange bolts (6) and washers (5) to the propeller shaft coupler  (2) and differential flange (3).
  12. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  13. Install the propeller shaft coupler-to-differential flange nuts (4).
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the propeller shaft coupler-to-differential flange bolts and nuts to 85 N·m (63 lb ft).

  15. Push the front propeller shaft (3) to the rear of the vehicle, and install the propeller shaft coupler (2) to the transmission flange (1).
  16. Important: If reusing the propeller shaft-to-flange nuts and bolts, to ensure proper adhesion and fastener retention, the threads must be free of debris prior to the application of the threadlocker.

  17. Thoroughly clean the threads using denatured alcohol, or equivalent, and allow to dry. Apply threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488), or equivalent, to the propeller shaft-to-flange bolt. Ensure that there are no gaps in the threadlocker along the length of the filled area of the bolt. Allow the threadlocker to cure approximately 10 minutes before installation.
  18. Install the front propeller shaft coupler-to-transmission flange bolts (4) to the transmission flange (1) and propeller shaft coupler (2).
  19. Install the propeller shaft coupler-to-transmission flange washers (5) and nuts (6).
  20. Tighten
    Tighten the propeller shaft coupler-to-transmission flange bolts and nuts to 85 N·m (63 lb ft).

  21. Install the center support bearing to the vehicle underbody.
  22. Important: Ensure that the shim packs on the support bearing are installed in their original positions.

  23. Raise the support device in order to hold the support bearing in position.
  24. Install the center support bearing bolts (2) to the vehicle's underbody.
  25. Tighten
    Tighten the support bearing bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  26. Remove the support device from under the support bearing.
  27. Install the exhaust system. Refer to Exhaust System Replacement.
  28. Lower the vehicle.

Propeller Shaft Replacement Manual Transmission

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  2. Remove the exhaust system. Refer to Exhaust System Replacement .

    Important: Remove only the propeller shaft coupler-to-transmission flange bolts. Do NOT remove the coupler from the propeller shaft.

  4. Remove the propeller shaft coupler-to-transmission flange bolts (5), nuts (1) and washers (4).

    Important: Remove only the propeller shaft coupler-to-differential flange bolts. Do NOT remove the coupler from the propeller shaft.

  6. Remove the propeller shaft coupler-to-differential flange bolts (6), nuts (4) and washers (5).

  8. Support the propeller shaft at the support bearing.
  9. Remove the bolts (2) securing the support bearing to the vehicle underbody.

  11. Push the front propeller shaft (6) toward the rear of the vehicle in order to release the propeller shaft coupler (3) from the transmission flange (2).
  12. While holding the front propeller shaft (6), lower the support device under the propeller shaft support bearing.
  13. Remove the support bearing from the mounting studs.

  15. Pull the rear propeller shaft (1) forward to release the coupler (2) from the differential flange (3).
  16. Note the number and location of the shim packs between the support bearing mounting bracket and the underbody to ensure proper assembly.

  17. Remove the propeller shaft from the vehicle.
  18. Inspect the propeller shaft coupler for the following conditions:
  19. • Splitting of the coupler
    • Deep cracking. Minor superficial cracking of the coupler is acceptable.

  5. Inspect the propeller shaft-to-flange nuts (4), bolts (6) and washers (5). Replace if damaged or worn.
  6. Install the rear propeller shaft coupler (2) to the differential flange (3).

  7. Rest the support bearing on the support device.

  10. Install the propeller shaft coupler-to-differential flange washers (5) to the propeller shaft coupler-to-differential flange bolts (6).
  11. Install the propeller shaft coupler-to-differential flange bolts (6) and washers (5) to the propeller shaft coupler (2) and differential flange (3).
  12. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  13. Install the propeller shaft coupler-to-differential flange nuts (4).
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the propeller shaft coupler-to-differential flange bolts and nuts to 85 N·m (63 lb ft).

  15. Push the front propeller shaft (6) to the rear of the vehicle and install the propeller shaft coupler (3) to the transmission flange (2).
  16. Important: If reusing the propeller shaft-to-flange nuts and bolts. To ensure proper adhesion and fastener retention, the threads must be free of debris prior to the application of the threadlocker.

  17. Thoroughly clean the threads using denatured alcohol, or equivalent, and allow to dry. Apply threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488), or equivalent, to the propeller shaft-to-flange bolt. Ensure that there are no gaps in the threadlocker along the length of the filled area of the bolt. Allow the threadlocker to cure approximately 10 minutes before installation.
  18. Install the propeller shaft coupler-to-transmission flange washers (4) to the propeller shaft coupler-to-transmission flange bolts (5).
  19. Install the propeller shaft coupler-to-transmission flange bolts (5) and washers (4) to the propeller shaft coupler (3) and transmission flange (2).
  20. Install the propeller shaft coupler-to-differential flange nuts (1).
  21. Tighten
    Tighten the propeller shaft coupler-to-transmission flange bolts and nuts to 85 N·m (63 lb ft).

  22. Install the center support bearing to the vehicle underbody.
  23. Important: Ensure that the shim packs on the support bearing are installed in their original positions.

  24. Raise the support device in order to hold the support bearing in position.
  25. Install the center support bearing bolts (2) to the vehicle underbody.
  26. Tighten
    Tighten the support bearing bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  27. Remove the support device from under the support bearing.
  28. Install the exhaust system. Refer to Exhaust System Replacement .
  29. Lower the vehicle.

Propeller Shaft Replacement CTS-V

Notice: The propeller shaft must be supported during removal and/or installation so that the CV joint does not articulate more than 8 degrees. Allowing the propeller shaft to articulate greater than 8 degrees could cause damage to the CV boot. Damage to boot could lead to contamination or loss of lubrication which could lead to CV joint damage.

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  2. Remove the exhaust system. Refer to Exhaust System Replacement .
  3. Using a suitable jack, support the propeller shaft close to the support bearing.
  4. Using a suitable jack, and/or heavy mechanical wire support the front propeller shaft close to the rear constant velocity (CV) joint.

  6. Remove the bolts (1) securing the support bearing to the vehicle underbody.

  7. Object Number: 902087  Size: SH
  8. Reference mark the location of the propeller shaft CV joint to the differential flange.
  9. Remove the propeller shaft CV joint-to-differential flange bolts.

  10. Object Number: 1236100  Size: SH

    Important: Remove only the propeller shaft coupler-to-transmission flange bolts. Do NOT remove the coupler from the propeller shaft.

  11. Remove the propeller shaft coupler-to-transmission flange bolts (5), nuts (1) and washers (4).
  12. Move the propeller shaft toward the front of the vehicle in order to release the propeller shaft CV joint from the differential flange.
  13. While holding the propeller shaft, lower the support device under the propeller shaft.
  14. Move the propeller shaft rearward to release the coupler from the transmission flange.
  15. Remove the propeller shaft from the vehicle.
  16. Inspect the propeller shaft coupler for the following conditions:
  17. • Splitting of the coupler
    • Deep cracking. Minor superficial cracking of the coupler is acceptable
    • Distorted or missing mounting bolt bushings
  18. If any of the above conditions are found, the propeller shaft requires replacement.
  19. If the propeller shaft coupler shows signs of heat related damage check for the following:
  20. • Exhaust system alignment or wear
    • Powertrain mount alignment or wear
  21. Inspect the propeller shaft CV joint assembly for the following conditions:
  22. • Grease leaking from the CV joint
    • Damage to the CV joint
    • Damage to the CV joint boot
  23. If any of the above conditions are found, the propeller shaft requires replacement.
  24. Inspect the propeller shaft-to-flange nuts, bolts, and washers. Replace if damaged or worn.

Installation Procedure

  1. Using a clean shop cloth clean the following:
  2. • Transmission flange centering pin
    • Propeller shaft centering bushing

    Important: The propeller shaft flange bolts must be installed toward the flanges.

  3. Using a suitable jack support the propeller shaft close to the support bearing.
  4. Using a suitable jack, and/or heavy mechanical wire support the front propeller shaft close to the rear CV joint.
  5. Apply a small amount of lubricant GM P/N 1051344 (Canadian P/N 993037), or equivalent, to the propeller shaft centering bushing.

  7. Install the front propeller shaft coupler (3) to the transmission flange (2).
  8. Push the propeller shaft (6) to the front of the vehicle and install the propeller shaft to the differential flange.
  9. Important: If reusing the propeller shaft-to-flange nuts and bolts, to ensure proper adhesion and fastener retention, the threads must be free of debris prior to the application of the threadlocker.

  10. Thoroughly clean the threads using denatured alcohol, or equivalent, and allow to dry. Apply Threadlocker GM P/N 12345493 (Canadian P/N 10953488), or equivalent, to the propeller shaft-to-flange bolt. Ensure that there are no gaps in the threadlocker along the length of the filled area of the bolt. Allow the threadlocker to cure approximately 10 minutes before installation.
  11. Install the propeller shaft coupler-to-differential flange washers (4) to the propeller shaft coupler-to-transmission flange bolts (1).
  12. Install the propeller shaft coupler-to-transmission flange bolts (5) and washers (4) to the differential flange (2) and propeller shaft coupler (3).
  13. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  14. Install the propeller shaft coupler-to-differential flange nuts (1).
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 85 N·m (63 lb ft).

    Important: If reusing the propeller shaft-to-flange nuts and bolts, to ensure proper adhesion and fastener retention, the threads must be free of debris prior to the application of the threadlocker.

  16. Thoroughly clean the threads using denatured alcohol, or equivalent, and allow to dry. Ensure that there are no gaps in the threadlocker along the length of the filled area of the bolt. Allow the threadlocker to cure approximately 10 minutes before installation.

  17. Object Number: 859586  Size: SH
  18. Install the propeller shaft CV joint-to-differential flange bolts.
  19. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts in sequence (1-6) to 60 N·m (44 lb ft).

  20. Raise the support device in order to hold the support bearing in position.
  21. Install the center support bearing bolts (1) to the vehicle underbody.
  22. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  23. Remove the support devices from the propeller shaft.
  24. Install the exhaust system. Refer to Exhaust System Replacement .
  25. Lower the vehicle.
