SERVICE ENGINE ASSEMBLIES INFORMATION & PROCEDURES

SUBJECT: SERVICE ENGINE ASSEMBLIES

MODELS AFFECTED: 1985-1991 DE VILLES AND FLEETWOODS 1982-1985 RWD DE VILLES AND BROUGHAMS 1982-1991 ELDORADOS AND SEVILLES 1987-1991 ALLANTES

This bulletin supersedes T-89-15 which should be discarded. This bulletin is being revised to include subsequent model years and update some part numbers.

The following is a list of 4.1L, 4.5L, and 4.9L V-8 service engine assemblies currently available from GMSPO to accommodate 1982-1991 Cadillacs. Past model service engines have been produced or remanufactured subsequent to the model year of the vehicle; and as such, incorporate refinements not considered in contemporary service information (i.e., 1982 engines may incorporate features normally associated with 1987 models). If future service is necessary, Service Bulletins filed in Group 6A should be consulted to clarify the service procedures necessary to accommodate these revisions.

Longitudinal engine assemblies are remanufactured for General Motors to Cadillac specifications. Transverse engine assemblies are produced using new parts.

Goodwrench engine assemblies include: cylinder block assembly, connecting rods, piston and liner assemblies, crankshaft, crankshaft balancer, camshaft and lifters, cylinder head assemblies including valve trains, camshaft and crankshaft sprockets with chain, front cover, water pump, oil pump, oil pan, intake manifold, oil filter, and instruction sheet. Assemblies 3635192 and 3635193 also include an ignition distributor.

When installing these Goodwrench engine assemblies:

1. Transfer Parts

The following components must be transfeffed to the replacement service engine: exhaust manifolds, throttle body, distributor and thrust washer (except 3635192 and 36-35193), EGR valve, generator, power steering pump, AIR pump (if so equipped), A/C compressor, flex plate, and all brackets, pulleys, and belts.

- When assembly 3635194 is installed in a 1985 FWD "C" chassis or a 1986 FWD "C" chassis before VIN 4252323, the oil filter adapter must also be transferred.

- When assembly 3635194 or 3635195 is installed in an Eldorado or Seville, the thermostat housing must also be transferred.

- When assembly 3635196 is installed in an Eldorado or Seville, the rear engine torque strut bracket must also be transferred.

- Engine lift brackets in some cases may have to be transferred to accommodate accessory mounting requirements.

NOTE: DO NOT REMOVE THE ENGINE VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION PLATE FROM THE ORIGINAL ENGINE. IDENTIFICATION OF THE ENGINE BEING INSTALLED MUST COMPLY WITH ANY APPLICABLE STATE LAWS OR REGULATIONS.

2. Special Distributor Gear Note (except assemblies 3635192 and 3635143) Before transferring the distributor, the distributor thrust washer must be transfeffed from the original engine to the service engine and a new distributor drive gear (10499813) must also be installed. The new distributor drive gear must be lubricated with pre-lube, P/N 1052365.

4. Dipstick Consideration

o Longitudinal service engine assemblies, 12336132 through 12336137, are not supplied with a new dipstick. The original parts must be transferred. See chart below for revised applications.

o Part numbers 3635194 and 3635195 are equipped with a dipstick calibrated for 1986 DeVilles after VIN 4252323 and 1987 DeVifles respectively.

- If 3635195 is installed in a 1987 Eldorado or Seville, transfer the dipstick from the replaced engine (1640020).

- If 3635194 is installed in a 1986 Eldorado or Seville, transfer the dipstick from the replaced engine (1640020).

- If 3635194 is installed in a 1985 or a 1986 DeVille before VIN 4252323, install dipstick 1629282.

o Assembly 3635196 is equipped with a dipstick calibrated for 1988-1989 DeVilles.

- If 3635196 is installed in a 1988-1989 Eldorado or Seville, transfer the dipstick and tube from the replaced engine.

The following chart summarizes 4.1L and 4.5L engine oil dipstick revisions for 1982 through 1989 applications:

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
