INTERMITT. CODE 53,E53,E053 DIAGNOSE/REPLACE PICK-UP COIL

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 82-85 D, 82-90 C,E,K, 87-90 V WITH 4.1, 4.5 ENGINES

Some 1982-1985 Broughams, 1982-1990 DeVilles, Fleetwoods, Eldorados, and Sevilles, and 1987-1990 Allantes equipped with the 4.1L or 4.5L engine may experience a code 53, E53, or E053. The intermittent code can be caused by a momentary internal open in the distributor pick-up coil. The customer may have experienced a miss, stumble, hesitation, sag, or engine stall. Should the vehicle experience a stall, the engine will restart immediately. Trouble code diagnosis may lead to an intermittent condition.

To repair this condition:

- Perform trouble code diagnosis

- Check circuit 430 intermittent opens or short to ground

- Check circuit 453 for intermittent open

- Check for loss of battery power to B+ terminal of the distributor

- Check ignition switch contact timing

- Replace pick up coil, refer to Section 6D of the appropriate Service Information Manual

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
