Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement LX9

Tools Required

J 39400-A Halogen Leak Detector

Removal Procedure

  1. Recover the refrigerant from the air conditioning (A/C) system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  2. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.

  3. Object Number: 1547615  Size: SH
  4. If equipped with a C60 compressor, remove the discharge line (3) to compressor nut (4).
  5. Remove the suction line (5) to compressor nut (4).
  6. Important: Cap or tape the openings of the A/C lines immediately in order to prevent system contamination.

  7. Remove the discharge (3) and suction (5) lines from the compressor.
  8. Remove and discard the sealing washers (2).

  10. If equipped with a C69 compressor, remove the discharge line (5) to compressor nut (4).
  11. Remove the suction line (2) to compressor nut (1).
  12. Important: Cap or tape the openings of the A/C lines immediately in order to prevent system contamination.

  13. Remove the discharge (5) and suction (5) lines from the compressor.
  14. Remove and discard the sealing washers (3).

  16. Release the drive belt tensioner.
  17. Remove the drive belt from the generator pulley.
  18. Remove the drive belt from the A/C compressor.

  19. Object Number: 1547168  Size: SH
  20. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  21. Remove the air deflector bolts and deflector.
  22. Remove the passenger side engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement .

  23. Object Number: 1547614  Size: SH
  24. Remove the A/C compressor bolts.
  25. Remove the A/C compressor.

Installation Procedure

Important: Replacement A/C compressors are partially precharged with polyalkylene glycol (PAG) oil. Refer to Refrigerant System Capacities .

  1. If replacing the A/C compressor, balance the compressor oil. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Oil Balancing .
  2. Install the A/C compressor.
  3. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  4. Install the A/C compressor bolts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  6. Install the passenger side engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement .
  7. Install the air deflector and bolts.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten bolts to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  9. Lower the vehicle.

  11. Release the drive belt tensioner.
  12. Install the drive belt to the A/C compressor.
  13. Install the drive belt to the generator pulley.

  14. Object Number: 1547618  Size: SH
  15. Remove the caps or tape from the discharge and suction line openings.
  16. Install NEW sealing washers (3) to the discharge and suction lines.
  17. If equipped with a C69 compressor, install the discharge (5) and suction (2) lines to the compressor.
  18. Install the discharge line (5) to compressor nut (4).
  19. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 16 N·m (12 lb ft).

  20. Install the suction line (2) to compressor nut (1).
  21. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 16 N·m (12 lb ft).

  22. Remove the caps or tape from the discharge and suction line openings.
  23. Install NEW sealing washers (2) to the discharge and suction lines.
  24. If equipped with a C60 compressor, install the discharge (3) and suction (5) lines to the compressor.
  25. Install the suction line (5) to compressor nut (4).
  26. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 16 N·m (12 lb ft).

  27. Install the discharge line (3) to compressor nut (4).
  28. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 16 N·m (12 lb ft).

  29. Connect the A/C compressor electrical connector.
  30. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  31. Leak test the A/C fittings using the J 39400-A .

Preliminary Procedure

  1. Recover the refrigerant. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  4. Remove the right front fender liner. Refer to Front Wheelhouse Liner Replacement .
  5. Remove the radiator air deflector. Refer to Radiator Air Baffle Assemblies and Deflectors .
  6. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connector.

A/C Compressor Hose Nut (Qty: 2)

Tip
Remove the A/C compressor hose from the A/C compressor and cap hose.

Tighten
20 N·m (15 lb ft)

Sealing Washer

Tip
Remove and discard sealing washers. Refer to Sealing Washer Replacement .

A/C Compressor Nut

Tip
Tighten in sequence with A/C compressor mounting bolts.

Tighten
50 N·m (37 lb ft)

A/C Compressor Bolt

Tip
Tighten the A/C compressor mounting bolts and nut in sequence.

Tighten
50 N·m (37 lb ft)

A/C Compressor Assembly

Tip

  1. Use a low viscosity, poly-alkylene glycol (PAG) oil. Use of the incorrect oil can result in compressor failure.
  2. When replacing the A/C compressor, balance the compressor. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Oil Balancing .
  3. Using J 39400 , leak test A/C compressor fittings.
