Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Expose the ambient light sensor to a bright incandescent light.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.

Do the headlamps turn OFF?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections

Go to Step 3

Rotate the headlamp switch to the auto lamps OFF position and release the switch.

Do the headlamps remain ON?

Go to Step 6

Test the ambient light sensor signal and ground circuits of the ambient light sensor for an open or high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs .

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 20

Test the ambient light sensor signal circuit of the ambient light sensor for a short to voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs .

Are the park lamps also illuminated?

Test the following circuits for a short to voltage:

    • Left headlamp low beam supply voltage
    • Left headlamp high beam supply voltage
    • Right headlamp low beam supply voltage
    • Right headlamp high beam supply voltage

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 20

Test the headlamp low beam relay control circuit of the body control module (BCM) for a short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs .

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 20

Using a scan tool, observe the following parameters:

    • Flash to Pass Switch
    • High Beam Switch
    • Low Beam Switch

Does any parameter indicate ON?

Go to Step 10

  1. Disconnect the headlamp or multifunction switch connector as appropriate.
  2. Using a scan tool, observe the parameter that indicated ON.

Does the parameter switch to OFF?

Go to Step 15

Test the following circuits of the BCM for a short to ground as appropriate:

    • Headlamp dimmer switch high beam signal
    • Flash to pass switch signal
    • Headlamp switch headlamps ON signal

Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs .

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 20

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the high or low beam relay. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs .

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the ambient light sensor. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs .

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the BCM. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs .

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the headlamp or multifunction switch as appropriate. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs .

Replace the appropriate high or low beam relay. Refer to Circuit Protection - Fusible Links .

Replace the ambient light sensor. Refer to Daytime Running Lamp (DRL) Ambient Light Sensor Replacement .

Replace the BCM. Refer to Control Module References for replacement, setup, and programming.

Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
