Removal Procedure

  1. Turn the steering wheel to the straight forward position, support it from movement, and remove the key from the ignition.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  3. Remove the right side engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement .
  4. Place the drain pan under the vehicle.

  6. Remove the 2 routing clip retainers from the RH side of the front cradle.

  7. Object Number: 1831670  Size: SH
  8. Remove the 2 routing clip retainers from the front side of the front cradle.

  9. Object Number: 1831719  Size: SH
  10. Compress the clamp (1) and disconnect the power steering inlet pipe/hose (2) from the cooler pipe (3).

  11. Object Number: 1831763  Size: SH

    Caution: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control which could result in personal injury.

  12. Remove the intermediate shaft pinch bolt and separate the intermediate shaft from the steering gear.
  13. Place a jack stand at the rear of the cradle support.
  14. Remove the 2 rear cradle support bolts.
  15. Using the jack stand, lower the rear of the cradle support for clearance.

  17. Remove the 2 power steering gear heat shield bolts and the shield.

  18. Object Number: 1831758  Size: SH
  19. Disconnect the cooler pipe/hose fitting from the steering gear. Discard the O-ring seal.
  20. Remove the cooler pipe/hose from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Position the cooler pipe/hose to the vehicle
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  3. Using a new O-ring seal, connect the cooler pipe/hose fitting to the steering gear.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the fitting to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  5. Position the steering gear heat shield and install the 2 bolts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the steering gear heat shield bolts to 14 N·m (124 lb in).

  7. Compress the clamp (1) and connect the power steering pump inlet pipe/hose (2) to the power steering cooler pipe/hose (3).
  8. Remove the drain pan from under the vehicle.
  9. Using the jack stand, raise the rear of the cradle support.
  10. Install the 2 rear cradle support bolts.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 165 N·m (122 lb ft).

  12. Remove the jack stand.

  14. Position the intermediate shaft to the steering gear and install the pinch bolt.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 48 N·m (35 lb ft).

  16. Install the 2 routing clip retainers to the RH side of the cradle support.
  17. Install the right side engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement .

  18. Object Number: 1831670  Size: SH
  19. Install the 2 routing clip retainers to the front side of the cradle support.
  20. Lower the vehicle.
  21. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
