AUTOMATIC SAFETY BELT SYSTEM SOLENOIDS

MODELS AFFECTED: 1987 SOMERSET, SKYLARK, AND LESABRE WITH AUTONATIC SAFETY BELT SYSTEM

Vehicles equipped with automatic safety belt system contain two solenoids per passive belt that are energized when a front door is opened to block out the belt lockup feature and allow free belt travel. These were designed to allow the driver and passengers to open the door quickly without having the retractors lock up.

With the battery disconnected, the front doors must be opened slowly to prevent lock up. Technicians should be aware, when working on a vehicle with automatic safety belts and the battery disconnected, that they could encounter belt lock up when opening the door quickly.

It is also suggested, when displaying a vehicle with automatic safety belts, that power be supplied to the automatic safety belt system to prevent the potential customer from experiencing this inconvenience. See the 1987 Chassis Service Manual Section 8A-146 for automatic safety belt system information.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
