DISCONNECTING RACK & PINION SUPPORT TO PREVENT DAMAGE

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1982 'A' AND 'X' SERIES VEHICLES PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION IN YOUR 1982 'A' AND 'X' SERIES SERVICE MANUALS. NOTICE: ANYTIME THE CRADLE ASSEMBLY IS LOWERED AT THE REAR FOR ACCESS TO THE DISTRIBUTOR OR OTHER COMPONENTS, THE 'RACK AND PINION STEERING GEAR ASSEMBLY' SHOULD BE DISCONNECTED FROM THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT AT THE STUB SHAFT (SEE ILLUSTRATION). ANYTIME THE CRADLE ASSEMBLY IS REMOVED FROM THE CAR, THE 'RACK AND PINION STEERING GEAR ASSEMBLY' MUST FIRST BE PROPERLY DISCONNECTED FROM THE CRADLE ASSEMBLY AND SUPPORTED IN A MANNER THAT DOES NOT ALLOW IT TO HANG BY THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT. FAILURE TO DO SO WILL RESULT IN DAMAGE TO THE INTERMEDIATE SHAFT.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
