SUBJECT: SERVICE MANUAL UPDATE/SECTIONS 6A1, 6C, 6E2 - REVISED FUEL PRESSURE RELIEF PROCEDURE

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1988-91 "J" 2.OL (VIN K)

This bulletin applies to 1988-1991 2.OL (VIN K) "J" Carline Service Manuals. Sections 6Al (2.OL OHC ENGINE), 6C (ENGINE FUEL), and 6E2 (DRIVEABILITY AND EMISSIONS,-TBI) contain incorrect fuel system pressure relief procedures.

The Throttle Body Injection (TBI) unit used on this engine contains a constant bleed in the fuel meter assembly which allows fuel pressure to bleed down when the engine is turned "OFF". The correct fuel pressure relief procedure for this system follows.

FUEL PRESSURE RELIEF PROCEDURE:

CAUTION:

- To reduce the risk of fire and personal injury, relieve the fuel system pressure before servicing fuel system components.

- After relieving system pressure, a small amount of fuel may be released when servicing lines or connections. To reduce the chance of personal injury, cover fuel line fittings with a shop towel before disconnecting, to catch any fuel that may leak out. Place the towel in an approved container when disconnect is completed.

1. Disconnect negative battery terminal to avoid possible fuel discharge if an accidental attempt is made to start the engine.

2. Loosen fuel filler cap to relieve tank vapour pressure.

3. The internal constant bleed feature of TBI Model 700 relieves fuel pump system pressure when the engine is turned "OFF". Therefore, no further steps are required.
