GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

Caution: Brake fluid may irritate eyes and skin. In case of contact, take the following actions:

   • Eye contact - rinse thoroughly with water.
   • Skin contact - rinse with soap and water.

Caution: Certain components in the Antilock Brake System (ABS) are not intended to be serviced individually. Attempting to remove or disconnect certain system components may result in personal injury and/or improper system operation. Only those components with approved removal and installation procedures should be serviced.

Caution: Do not move the vehicle until a firm brake pedal is obtained. Failure to obtain a firm brake pedal before moving vehicle may result in personal injury.

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

Notice: The use of rubber hoses or parts other than those specified for the Antilock Brake System (ABS) may lead to functional problems requiring replacement of the hydraulic parts. Replace all components included in repair kits used to service this system. Lubricate rubber parts with clean, fresh brake fluid to ease assembly. Do not use lubricated shop air on brake parts as damage to rubber components may result. If any hydraulic component is removed or brake line disconnected, it is necessary to bleed the entire brake system. The fastener tightening specifications are for dry, unlubricated fasteners.

Notice: Avoid spilling brake fluid on any of the vehicle's painted surfaces, wiring, cables or electric connectors. Brake fluid will damage paint and electrical connections. If any fluid is spilled on the vehicle, flush the area with water to lessen the damage.

Observe the following general precautions when diagnosing or servicing the Antilock Brake System, the Traction Control System, and/or other vehicle systems:

    • Failure to install the correct EBCM/EBTCM when servicing a vehicle may cause the following problems:
      • Reduced system performance
      • Severe damage to vehicle components
    • Disconnect the EBCM/EBTCM and valve block connectors before performing any vehicle welding work with an electric arc welder.
    • Never connect or disconnect the EBCM/EBTCM and valve block connectors with the ignition switch in the RUN position.
    • Do not disassemble any component which is designated as non-serviceable.
Some Antilock Brake System components are not serviced separately and must be replaced as an assembly.

Failure to observe these precautions may result in Antilock Brake System damage.
