Circuit Description

The electronic brake control module (EBCM) learns the model it is installed in, by using the vehicle ID information via the class 2 serial data line. Each time the vehicle is in the RUN position or the powertrain control module (PCM) communicates this information via class 2, the EBCM internally compares the VIN information with the information stored in digits 2 through 5 of the VIN. If digit 5 of the VIN is incorrect, the EBCM will indicate a VIN information error is present.

DTC Descriptor

This diagnostic procedure supports the following DTC:

DTC C0565 Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Information Error

Conditions for Setting the DTC

    • The EBCM detects digit 5 of the VIN is incorrect.
    • The condition must occur when the ignition switch is first turned on.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

The EBCM stores DTC C0565 in memory.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

    • The EBCM recognizes digit 5 of the VIN as valid information.
    • A history DTC will clear after 100 consecutive ignition cycles, if the condition for the malfunction is no longer present.

Diagnostic Aids

DTC C0565 is related to an internal VIN error in the EBCM. The VIN information is not removable from the EBCM.
