Forward Servo Replacement M15 (FWD)

Removal Procedure

  1. Install the engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture in Engine Mechanical.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the stabilizer shaft. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Replacement in Front Suspension.
  4. Remove the power steering gear heat shield. Refer to Steering Gear Heat Shield Replacement in Power Steering System.
  5. Remove the power steering gear from the frame. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement in Power Steering System.

  6. Object Number: 378919  Size: SH
  7. Use a strap in order to secure the power steering gear to the exhaust manifold.
  8. Remove the power steering cooler line clamps from the frame. Refer to Power Steering Cooler Pipe/Hose Replacement in Power Steering System.
  9. Use wire in order to secure the power steering cooler line to an engine component.
  10. Remove the engine mount nuts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  11. Remove the transaxle mount nuts. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement .
  12. Use a utility stand in order to support the frame front.
  13. Use a utility stand in order to support the frame rear.
  14. Remove the frame bolts.
  15. Use the utility stand in order to lower the frame rear for access to the forward servo cover.
  16. Position a drain pan under the forward servo cover.

  18. Remove the forward band servo cover bolts.
  19. Remove the forward servo cover.
  20. Remove the forward servo cover O-ring.
  21. Remove the servo piston assembly.
  22. Remove the servo spring.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 164777  Size: SH
  1. Install the servo spring.
  2. Install the servo piston assembly.
  3. Install the forward servo cover O-ring.
  4. Install the forward servo cover.
  5. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the forward band servo cover bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the forward band servo cover bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  8. Remove the drain pan from under the forward servo cover.
  9. Important: Ensure that the power steering cooler line does not become trapped or damaged during this step.

  10. Use the utility stand in order to raise the frame rear.
  11. Install the NEW frame bolts.
  12. Install the powertrain mounts to the frame.
  13. Install the transaxle mount nuts. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement .
  14. Install the engine mount nuts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  15. Install the power steering gear to the frame. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement in Power Steering System.
  16. Install the power steering gear heat shield. Refer to Steering Gear Heat Shield Replacement in Power Steering System.
  17. Install the stabilizer shaft. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Replacement in Front Suspension.
  18. Lower the vehicle.
  19. Remove the engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture in Engine Mechanical.
  20. Important: It is recommended that the transmission adaptive pressure (TAP) information be reset.

    Resetting the TAP values using a scan tool will erase all learned values in all cells. As a result, the ECM, PCM or TCM will need to relearn the TAP values. Transmission performance may be affected as new TAP values are learned.

  21. Reset the TAP values. Refer to Adapt Function .

Forward Servo Replacement M76

Removal Procedure

    Notice: Removal and installation of the transfer case while the transmission is in vehicle may cause improper positioning of the park gear thrust bearing. If the transfer case fasteners are tightened while the park gear thrust bearing is out of position, the park gear thrust bearing, transmission, and/or the transfer case will be damaged.

  1. Remove the transaxle assembly. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.
  2. Remove the transfer case from the transmission. Refer to Transfer Case and/or Seal Replacement in Transfer Case - Steyr.

  4. Remove the forward band servo cover bolts.
  5. Remove the forward servo cover.
  6. Remove the forward servo cover O-ring.
  7. Remove the servo piston assembly.
  8. Remove the servo spring.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 164777  Size: SH
  1. Install the servo spring.
  2. Install the servo piston assembly.
  3. Install the forward servo cover O-ring.
  4. Install the forward servo cover.
  5. Install the transfer case. Refer to Transfer Case and/or Seal Replacement in Transfer Case - Steyr.
  6. Install the transaxle. Refer to Transmission Replacement in Transmission/Transaxle.
