CONDITION:

SOME VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 1991-93 HYDRA-MATIC 4T60-E (RPO M13) TRANSAXLE BUILT ON OR BEFORE JULIAN DATE 302 (OCTOBER 28, 1992) MAY EXHIBIT A FLUID LEAK BETWEEN THE HELIX CONVERTER SEAL AND ITS BORE. UNDER SOME CONDITIONS THE HELIX CONVERTER SEAL MAY WALK-OUT PARTIALLY OR COMPLETELY. HOT WEATHER AND/OR EXTREME OPERATING CONDITIONS ARE CONTRIBUTING FACTORS TO THIS CONCERN.

CAUSE:

THE ABOVE CONDITION MAY BE DUE TO THE TAPER OF THE HELIX CONVERTER SEAL BORE AND CANNOT BE REPAIRED AT A DEALERSHIP LEVEL.

CORRECTION:

BEGIN WITH THE "FLUID LEAK DIAGNOSIS" ("AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ON-VEHICLE SERVICE SECTION OF THE 1991-93 SERVICE MANUAL") WHICH PROVIDES A DETAILED PROCEDURE IN LOCATING AND REPAIRING VEHICLE LEAKS.

IF IT IS DETERMINED THE LEAK IS FROM THE HELIX CONVERTER SEAL, REMOVE THE TRANSAXLE ASSEMBLY AND REPLACE IT WITH A SERVICE REPLACEMENT TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY (SRTA).

SERVICE MANUAL INFORMATION:

REFER TO THE 1991-93 SERVICE MANUAL, AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE ON-VEHICLE SERVICE SECTION 7A FOR PROPER ON-VEHICLE SERVICE TO REMOVE AND REPLACE A HYDRA-MATIC 4T60-E TRANSAXLE.
