Removal Procedure

J 37043 Parking Brake Cable Release Tool

Notice: Handling the parking brake cables during service requires extra care. Damage to the nylon coating reduces the corrosion protection. If the damage area passes through the nylon coating, increased parking brake effort could result. Avoid contacting the protective coating with sharp-edge tools or the sharp surfaces of the vehicle underbody.

  1. Disable the parking brake cable adjuster. Refer to Parking Brake Cable Adjuster Disabling .
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  3. Remove the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement .

  5. Remove the park brake cables from the parking brake equalizer.

  6. Object Number: 796017  Size: SH
  7. Using the J 37043  (1), remove the park brake cable .
  8. Important: When removing the left park brake cable, the fuel tank DOES NOT have to be removed.

  9. Install a pole jack with a block of wood under the fuel tank.

  11. Remove the shield for the fuel tank. Refer to Fuel Tank Shield Replacement .
  12. Remove the rear support bracket from the fuel tank.
  13. Important: When performing this service procedure, the fuel tank will only drop about 102 mm (4 inches) when supported by the pole jack. It is not necessary to lower the fuel tank any further than that.

  14. Lower the fuel tank to allow access to the rear park brake cable retainer above the fuel tank.

  16. Remove the park brake cable nuts from the underbody mounting studs.

  18. Remove the park brake cable from the park brake cable retainers, left rear shown.

  20. Remove the park brake bracket bolt from the frame.
  21. Remove the park brake retainer from the frame, left rear shown.
  22. Compress the retaining clips for the parking brake cable.
  23. Remove the park brake cable from the bracket.

  25. Remove the park brake cable from the actuator.
  26. Push the park brake cable through the frame toward the inside from the vehicle.
  27. Remove the park brake cable from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 777356  Size: SH
  1. Install the park brake cable over the fuel tank assembly.

  2. Object Number: 777357  Size: SH
  3. Pull the park brake cable through the frame toward the outside of the vehicle.
  4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 777355  Size: SH
  5. Install the park brake cable nuts to the underbody studs.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the park brake cable retaining nuts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  7. Raise the fuel tank the fuel tank .
  8. Install the rear support bracket for the fuel tank.
  9. Remove the pole jack and the block of wood from the fuel tank.

  11. Install the park brake cable on the actuator.
  12. Compress the retaining clips for the park brake cable.

  13. Object Number: 777470  Size: SH
  14. Install the park brake retainer to the frame (left rear shown).

  15. Object Number: 777399  Size: SH
  16. Install the park brake bracket bolt in the frame.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten bolt to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).

  18. Install the park brake cable to the park brake cable retainers, left rear shown.

  20. Install the shield for the fuel tank. Refer to Fuel Tank Shield Replacement .

  22. Install the park brake cables to the retainer.

  23. Object Number: 778141  Size: SH
  24. Install the park brake cables to the park brake equalizer.

  25. Object Number: 746665  Size: SH
  26. Install the rear propeller shaft. Refer to Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement .
  27. Lower the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  28. Enable the parking brake cable adjuster. Refer to Parking Brake Cable Adjuster Enabling .
  29. Test the park brake operation.
  30. Adjust the park brake shoes. Refer to Park Brake Adjustment .
