Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check for starting and charging?

  1. Install a scan tool.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. With a scan tool, observe the Commanded Starter in the Engine 2 data list.

Does the scan tool display Disabled?

  1. With a scan tool, observe the Commanded Starter in the Engine 2 data list.
  2. Turn the ignition to the CRANK position.

Does the scan tool display Enabled?

Turn the ignition to the CRANK position.

Does the start enable relay click?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the starter enable relay.
  3. Measure the voltage from the feed circuit of the start enable relay to the load circuit of the start enable relay.

Does the voltage measure greater than the specified value?

12 V

Measure the voltage from the feed circuit of the start enable relay and a good ground.

Does the voltage measure greater than the specified value?

12 V

Repair the open in the feed circuit of the start enable relay.

Test the control circuit of the starter solenoid for a high resistance or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

  1. Disconnect the start enable relay.
  2. Connect a test lamp between the control circuit of the start enable relay and the coil side feed circuit of the start enable relay
  3. Turn the ignition to the CRANK position.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

  1. Probe the coil side feed circuit of the start enable relay with a test lamp that is connected to a good ground.
  2. Turn the ignition to the CRANK position.

Test the ignition sense circuit of the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) for a short to voltage. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
