INFO. ON INTERMITTENT FUEL GAUGE INACCURACY

SUBJECT: INFORMATION ON INTERMITTENT FUEL GAGE INACCURACY.

MODELS: 1998 BUICK LESABRE

INTERMITTENT FUEL GAGE INACCURACY MAY BE CAUSED BY CIRCUIT 1589 (FUEL LEVEL SENDER INPUT) CHAFING IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT NEAR THE ALTERNATOR.

TO DIAGNOSE, CHECK THE SCAN DATA LIST FOR FUEL LEVEL PERCENTAGE WHEN THE CONDITION OCCURS AND DETERMINE IF THE DATA IS INCORRECT. THE READING SHOULD BE AROUND 250 OHMS WHEN THE TANK IS FULL AND NEAR 40 OHMS WHEN EMPTY AND SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN FOR OTHER LEVELS. IF READINGS ARE WRONG CHECK THE WIRING FROM PCM TO THE FUEL LEVEL SENSOR FOR EXCESSIVE RESISTANCE OR FOR SHORT TO GROUND. IT MAY BE NECESSARY TO MOVE THE WIRING HARNESS WITH THE OHMMETER ATTACHED TO RECREATE THE PROBLEM.

NOTE: THE SERVICE MANUAL CALLS OUT INCORRECT PIN NUMBERS AT THE PCM AND/OR UB3 CLUSTERS FOR INPUT TO THE PCM AND CLUSTER. THE CORRECT PINS ARE ON CONNECTOR NUMBER TWO, WHICH IS THE CLEAR CONNECTOR END AT THE PCM. CIRCUIT 1589 IS PIN 69 AND HAS A PURPLE WIRE AND CIRCUIT 808 IS ON PIN 35 A BLACK WIRE.
