J 42640 Steering Column Lock Pin

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.

  2. Object Number: 1206804  Size: SH
  3. Position the seal in order to provide access to the lower pinch bolt on the intermediate steering shaft.
  4. Remove the lower pinch bolt from the power steering gear stub shaft.

  5. Object Number: 333146  Size: SH

    Caution: The front wheels of the vehicle must be maintained in the straight ahead position and the steering column must be in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft. Failure to follow these procedures will cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in damage to the SIR coil assembly.

  6. Insert J 42640 into the steering column access hole in order to lock the steering column. This will maintain the orientation.
  7. Disconnect the intermediate steering shaft from the power steering gear stub shaft. Note the shaft to gear alignment for installation.
  8. Lower the vehicle.

  9. Object Number: 454259  Size: SH
  10. Remove the upper pinch bolt from the intermediate steering shaft.
  11. Disconnect the intermediate steering shaft from the steering column. Note the shaft to column alignment for installation.
  12. Remove the intermediate steering shaft from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Position the intermediate steering shaft into the seal.

  2. Object Number: 454259  Size: SH
  3. Connect the intermediate shaft to the steering column as noted during removal.
  4. Install the upper boot to the ridge around the intermediate shaft pass-through.
  5. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  6. Install the upper intermediate steering shaft pinch bolt.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the pinch bolt to 48 N·m (35 lb ft).

  8. Connect the intermediate steering shaft seal onto the steering column.
  9. Raise the vehicle.

  11. Connect the intermediate steering shaft to the power steering gear stub shaft as noted during removal.
  12. Install the lower intermediate steering shaft pinch bolt.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the pinch bolt to 48 N·m (35 lb ft).

  14. Connect the intermediate steering shaft seal onto the power steering gear. Rotate the lower seal as necessary to gain maximum clearance.
  15. Lower the vehicle.
