DTC Descriptor

DTC C0253 00: Centering Error

Circuit/System Description

The electronic brake control module (EBCM) receives serial data message inputs from the steering wheel position sensor identifying the position and direction of the steering wheel rotation.

Conditions for Running the DTC

    • Ignition ON.
    • The vehicle speed is greater than 40 km/h (25 mph).

Conditions for Setting the DTC

If the steering angle sensor controller area network (CAN) message or the EBCM indicates an uncentered sensor

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

If equipped, the following actions occur:

    • The EBCM disables the ABS/traction control system (TCS)/vehicle stability enhancement system (VSES) and for the duration of the ignition cycle.
    • The ABS indicator illuminates.
    • The Stability indicator illuminates.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

    • The condition for the DTC is no longer present.
    • The EBCM clears the history DTC when a current DTC is not detected in 100 consecutive drive cycles.

Circuit/System Verification

  1. Verify that DTC C0186, C0196, C0252, or C0710 is not set.
  2. If any of the DTCs are set, refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle.
  3. With the scan tool perform the steering angle sensor centering, refer to Steering Angle Sensor Centering.
  4. Operate the vehicle within the conditions for setting, and verify the DTC does not reset.
  5. If the DTC sets, replace the EBCM.

Repair Instructions

Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification after completing the diagnostic procedure.
