Circuit/System Description

The electronic brake control module (EBCM) monitors the ignition voltage available for system operation. A high or low voltage condition prevents the system from operating properly. If the EBCM detects the system voltage is out of range, DTC C0896 will set.

Conditions for Running the DTC

    • The ignition is ON.
    • The vehicle speed is greater than 5 km/h (3 mph).

Conditions for Setting the DTC

    • The EBCM operating voltage at terminal 8 falls below 9.4  volts out of ABS/TCS control, or 8.8  volts during ABS/TCS control.
    • The EBCM operating voltage at terminal 8 rises above 17.4  volts.
    • The low voltage or the high voltage is detected for more than 500 milliseconds with the vehicle speed above 6 km/h (3.6 mph).

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

    • The EBCM disables the ABS/TCS, and the vehicle stability enhancement system (VSES) and for the duration of the ignition cycle.
    • The ABS indicator turns ON.
    • The Stability Off indicator turns ON.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

    • The condition for the DTC is no longer present.
    • The EBCM automatically clears the history DTC when a current DTC is not detected in 100 consecutive drive cycles.

Diagnostic Aids

    • A high or low voltage DTC set in multiple modules indicates a concern in the charging system.
    •  A possible cause of this DTC could be overcharging with a battery charger or jump starting.
    • A high or low voltage value in multiple modules indicates a concern in the charging system.

Circuit/System Verification

  1. Engine running, accessories OFF, measure and record the battery voltage at the battery terminals. The voltage should be between 12.6 and 15.5 volts.
  2. If not within the specified range, refer to Charging System Test
  3. Observe the scan tool EBCM Ignition Voltage parameter. The reading should be between 12.6 and 15.5 volts.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the EBCM.
  2. Test for less than 5.0 ohms between the ground circuit terminals listed below and ground.
  3. •  Terminal 12 X1
    •  Terminal 15 X1
If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuits for an open/high resistance.
  4. Ignition ON, verify a test lamp illuminates between the IGN circuit terminal 8 X1 and ground.
  5. If the test lamp does not illuminate , test the IGN circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.
  6. If the circuits tests normal, replace the EBCM.

Repair Instructions
