Circuit Description

The inflatable restraint Passenger Presence System (PPS) is a calibrated unit. Any time the passenger seat bottom cushion or trim attachments have been removed/serviced or the PPS has been replaced, the PPS system must learn the empty seat value by rezeroing. If there is an error during the rezeroing process, the PPS will set DTC 032. DTC 056 will also set indicating a system fault until a successful rezero has been completed. When the PPS detects this DTC within the PPS it will notify the customer of the enable/disable status by turning on the OFF indicator on the PASSENGER AIR BAG ON/OFF indicators, then the PPS will communicate to the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) through a non class 2 communications circuit that a PPS fault is present. The SDM will then turn the AIR BAG indicator ON, and set DTC B0092 indicating a problem within the PPS and will suppress the deployment of the instrument panel (I/P) module.

DTC Descriptor

This diagnostic procedure supports the following DTC:

DTC 032 Rezeroing Error Fault

Conditions for Running the DTC

Ignition 1 voltage is within the normal operating voltage range.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

    • An error occurs after a rezero command was given.
    • Sensor data is out of range during rezero.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

    • The PPS will set a DTC 032, then communicate with the SDM via non class 2 circuit.
    • The PPS will also set DTC 056 indicating a PPS internal system fault has occurred until the re-zeroing procedure was performed.
    • The SDM will set DTC B0092.
    • The SDM disables the I/P deployment loop.
    • The PPS will turn ON the passenger air bag status OFF indicator.
    • The SDM commands the AIR BAG indicator ON via class 2 serial data.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

    • The condition responsible for setting the DTC no longer exists.
    • You issue a scan tool CLEAR DTCs command.
    • A history DTC will clear once 255 malfunction-free ignition cycles have occurred.

Diagnostic Aids

This fault indicates that the system did not correctly rezero. You may have to perform the rezero process several times until an acceptable rezero is achieved. When the PPS has been properly rezeroed, using a scan tool a clear DTCs command must be given to clear DTC 032 and DTC 056 from history.

Test Description

The number below refers to the step number on the diagnostic table.

  1. Test is performing the rezeroing procedure and may need to be performed several times to be successful.

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Use the scan tool in order to clear the SIR and Passenger Presence System (PPS) DTCs.
  3. Important: If DTC resets after rezeroing, it may be necessary to perform this rezeroing procedure several times.

  4. Rezero the PPS. Refer to Control Module References for replacement, setup, and programming.
  5. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC as specified in the supporting text.
