SERVICE MANUAL UPDATE HUB BEARING SEAL INSTALLATION

MODELS AFFECTED: 1985-1989 ELECTRA AND 1986-1989 LESABRE MODELS

This bulletin supersedes 89-3-10 and is being revised to include past model service information.

Installation of the 1989 front suspension hub and bearing seal differs from prior years. The seal is installed on the outboard side of the steering knuckle.

Fill the cavity between the hub/bearing seal and the bearing (see Figure 1) with GM 1052497 grease anytime the hub assembly is removed. Refer to the 1989 Service Information Manual (Section 3C, Front Suspension) for complete hub/bearing seal removal and installation procedure.

Steering knuckles for 1985-1988 Buick Electra and LeSabre models (except 1986 models with ABS) are being serviced with 1989 steering knuckles. When installing these parts, it will be necessary to replace the hub and bearing seal and drive axle deflector ring. On 1987-1988 models with ABS the wheel speed sensor must also be replaced. On 1986 models with ABS the wheel speed sensor is not compatible with the new knuckle, and the new wheel speed sensor is not compatible with the 1986 ABS. Therefore, on this model it is necessary to replace the knuckle with the original style knuckle, seal, and deflector ring. Refer to the GMSPO Service Parts Book for detailed part compatibility information.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
