RACK & PINION RACK BEARING REVISED ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE

Models Affected: All Front Wheel Drive Buicks Except Riviera

The following revision has been made to the rack bearing preload adjustment procedures when performed on the car.

1. Loosen adjuster plug lock nut.

2. Turn the adjuster plug clockwise until it bottoms, then back off plug 50 Deg -70 DEG. Hold plug from moving and tighten lock nut.

3. Check for freeness of steering wheel return to center from both a right and left turn.

This procedure for on-car service adjustment supersedes the article on this subject in Bulletin 83-28, dated December 1982. A pinion preload torque check should still be made when off-car service is performed.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
